Motor Vehicle Collision – Investigation: C23-226290

On September 17, 2023, at approximately 8:10 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Traffic Division encountered a collision involving multiple vehicles while in the area of Portage Avenue and Sturgeon Road. Officers immediately notified the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service as injuries were apparent. Two occupants in one vehicle were transported to hospital in critical and unstable condition. The lone occupant of the second vehicle attended hospital as a precaution. All parties have been upgraded to stable condition.

The investigation has determined that two vehicles, a white Honda Civic and a black  Volkswagon GTI, had been racing westbound on Portage Avenue approaching Sturgeon Road. At the same time, an eastbound blue Honda Civic was turning northbound onto Sturgeon Road when it was struck by the white Honda Civic, causing a serious collision.

The drivers of the vehicles racing have been charged with the following:

- Race with another Motor Vehicle - HTA189 (1)

- Drive Carelessly - HTA 188 (2)

- Both vehicles have been seized and impounded

The Traffic Division continues to investigate the incident.

Traffic Enforcement continued in the area throughout the evening. One vehicle in particular was stopped on Moray Street by officers after being observed travelling 127 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone.
