On August 5, 2023, at approximately 8:15 p.m., General Patrol officers from the North District and the Tactical Support Team responded to a shooting at a residence in the Jefferson neighbourhood.

A deceased 15-year-old male was located with a gunshot wound.

The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation with the assistance of General Patrol and the Forensic Identification Section.

The investigation revealed a group of teenagers were socializing at one of their residences, along with the accused, who brought a sawed-off shotgun. At one point, the accused carelessly pointed a loaded firearm at three of the youths. 

One of the youths was shot and killed when the firearm discharged in his direction.

Police continued to investigate, and the firearm was subsequently recovered. 

On August 8, the Major Crimes Unit arrested a 16-year-old male of Winnipeg. He has been charged with Manslaughter and the following firearm-related offences:

- Pointing a Firearm x 3

- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition

- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

- Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regs

- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition

He was detained in custody.
