Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Brian Bowman issued the following statements in response to the tragic events in Orlando, Florida over the weekend, and in response to learning of the passing of Mr. David Sanders.

In response to the tragic events occurring in Orlando, Florida, the Mayor issued the following statement:

On behalf of all Winnipeggers, I want to offer my deepest condolences to all families and friends of the victims of the senseless violence that occurred in Orlando, Florida over the weekend.

Complete closure of Ellice Avenue from Sherbrook Street to Langside Street on Saturday, June 11

Winnipeg, MB - Ellice Avenue between Sherbrook Street and Langside Street will be completely closed to vehicular traffic from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.

The closure is required for the Ellice Street Festival and pedestrian sidewalk access will be maintained throughout the day.

Motorists should allow additional travel time to get to their destinations, and use alternate routes.

Reminder: Tomorrow is By-Election day

Winnipeg, MB - Tomorrow is By-Election Day for School Trustees in the School Divisions of River East Transcona (Ward 3), St. James-Assiniboia (King Edward-Deer Lodge Ward) and Louis Riel (Ward 2). Polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB - Today, Winnipeg Transit launched its new electronic fare collection system ‘peggo’ which will operate on all transit buses using reloadable fare cards and readers. The new fare card will be rolled out in phases, with seniors as the first group to use their peggo cards starting July 4, followed by full fare and youth passengers in early August.

Winnipeg's Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies wins national award

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg's Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies has won a national award for planning excellence from the Canadian Institute of Planners in the Sustainable Mobility, Transportation, and Infrastructure Category. The Canadian Institute of Planners recognizes planning projects for their excellence, innovation, impact on the profession, implementation potential and overall presentation.

Voters Reminded to Bring Identification

Winnipeg, MB - A School Trustee By-Election for the School Divisions of River East Transcona (Ward 3), St. James-Assiniboia (King Edward-Deer Lodge Ward) and Louis Riel (Ward 2) will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016.

The City of Winnipeg requires all eligible voters to provide identification at the voting place.

Winnipeg's urban forest to see some ReLeaf in 2016

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg has been awarded a $20,000 grant from Tree Canada and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation to fund the Winnipeg ReLeaf program in 2016. In partnership with Trees Winnipeg, a local non-profit organization, the Winnipeg ReLeaf Program will encourage homeowners to replant trees lost to Dutch elm disease (DED), and provide them with training on the “Right Tree Right Place” approach and correct planting techniques to help ensure the survivorship of the newly planted trees.
