New Members Added to Mayor's Indigenous Advisory Circle

Winnipeg, MB - June 21, 2016 - New community members will be joining the Mayor’s Indigenous Advisory Circle Mayor Brian Bowman announced today.

“I am pleased with the success of the Circle as a tool to educate and create awareness about Winnipeg’s rich Indigenous culture and discuss ways to bring our community together,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “I want to thank outgoing members for their work on the Circle, I am grateful for their willingness to contribute personal experiences and knowledge for the betterment of our city.”

City of Winnipeg employees to celebrate National Aboriginal Day

Winnipeg, MB - City of Winnipeg employees will celebrate National Aboriginal Day tomorrow, Tuesday, June 21, in the City Hall courtyard, 510 Main Street.

“This year’s Annual National Aboriginal Day celebration is extra special for Winnipeg given that it is taking place during the 2016 Year of Reconciliation,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “National Aboriginal Day is about remembering our roots and celebrating them together, and there is no better place to celebrate than Winnipeg.”

Additional consultation on implementation of the Corydon-Osborne Area Plan

Winnipeg, MB - The public is invited to a workshop on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 regarding the implementation of the Corydon-Osborne Area Plan. The Plan was adopted by City Council in 2014 and is a vision to guide future growth and change in the area in accordance with OurWinnipeg, the City’s long range development plan. The Plan also outlines the City's commitments and priorities over next 20 years for land use, transportation, services and parks and open space in the area.

Waverley Street road closures start Friday, June 17 at 6:00 p.m. until Monday, June 20 at 6:00 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - In addition to regular road closures on Sunday, June 19 for the Manitoba Marathon, motorists are advised of the following road closures that will also be in place that weekend on Waverley Street from 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17 until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, June 20.

Waverley Street between Taylor Avenue and Wilkes Avenue will be completely closed to northbound and southbound traffic for routine maintenance of a CN railway crossing.

Winnipeg Public Library launches Family Literacy Playground

Winnipeg, MB - Today, the newest Family Literacy Playground was launched at the Millennium Library.

“Today’s public libraries are no longer a place where children must be silent - Family Literacy Playgrounds encourage families to have fun and learn at the same time,” said Councillor Mike Pagtakhan, Chair of the Standing Committee on Protection, Community Services, and Parks. “I’m proud to support this initiative as another way the City of Winnipeg’s programs and services meet the evolving needs of the community.”

Insect Control Update 5

Winnipeg, MB - To date, the Insect Control Branch (ICB) has used a combination of larviciding and residual treatments to control mosquito populations. These measures alone are no longer sufficient to control the current adult nuisance mosquito population, therefore an adult nuisance mosquito fogging program will be implemented. Fogging will begin on Thursday, June 16, 2016, between 9:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.

Bike Week returns for another year of citywide festivities

Winnipeg, MB - For the third year in a row, bicycle riders in Winnipeg can enjoy events happening around the city for Bike Week when it kicks off on June 18, 2016. This year, Bike Week Winnipeg presents seven days of new and returning bike programming, including over 60 city-wide pit stops to service a predicted 4,000 riders participating in the 9th annual Bike to Work Day on Friday, June 24.
