Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Stephens Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 5:51 a.m. on September 1, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded reports of a fire in a suite in a multi-family residence in the 0 to 100 block of Stephens Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy smoke venting from one of the suites. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 6:08 a.m.

Occupants of the building self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. A search was completed and no additional occupants were located. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Selkirk Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 5:47 p.m. on August 31, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two storey house in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue. Once on scene crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. An offensive attack was launched but due to deteriorating conditions, crews were forced to exit the house and transition to a defensive attack.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Claudia Place Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 8:50 p.m. on August 30, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a home on Claudia Place. Once on scene, crews launched an offensive attack to extinguish a fire in one of the bedrooms. The fire was declared under control at 9:13 p.m.

Occupants of the home had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One individual was assessed by paramedics on scene but did not require transport to hospital.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental due to a child playing with matches.

Terry Sawchuk Arena closed for the 2019/2020 ice season

Winnipeg, MB – Due to the discovery of extensive mould exposed throughout the arena ceiling, and as a precautionary safety measure, the Terry Sawchuk Arena is expected to be closed for the entire 2019/2020 ice season to allow for abatement and remediation.

Elm Bark Beetle Control Program commences

Winnipeg, MB – On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, the City of Winnipeg is commencing the Elm Bark Beetle Control Program, weather permitting. The program is intended to control elm bark beetles, the carriers of Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

Temporary closure of Louise Bridge between Sutherland Avenue and Nairn Avenue extended until September 9

Winnipeg, MB – The temporary closure of the northbound and southbound directions of travel on the Louise Bridge between Sutherland Avenue and Nairn Avenue for maintenance work, has been extended until 6 a.m. September 9, due to the rainy weather we experienced this week.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on the east sidewalk.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow additional travel time to reach their destinations, and use alternate routes such as Provencher Boulevard and Redwood Avenue.

Road closures for annual Sikh Procession

Winnipeg, MB – The road closures listed below will be in place intermittently this Sunday, September 1, between 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., for the annual Sikh Procession.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Guildford Street fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 11:30 p.m. on August 28, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of smoke and the smell of burning in a one and a half storey home in the 300 block of Guildford Street.

Once on scene, crews found light smoke in the home and used thermal imaging cameras to find an area burning in the walls of the attic. Walls were taken down to allow firefighters access to the fire, and by 12:31 a.m. they declared it under control.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Pritchard Avenue fire

Winnipeg, MB – At approximately 7:37 p.m. on August 28, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a vacant one and a half storey house in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene crews found a well involved fire which had spread to a neighbouring house which was also vacant. A defensive attack was launched until it was safe enough to have crews enter both homes to finish fighting the fire. The fire was declared under control at approximately 7:53 p.m.
