Mould discovered inside facility’s ceiling requires abatement and remediation

Winnipeg, MB – Due to the discovery of extensive mould exposed throughout the arena ceiling, and as a precautionary safety measure, the Terry Sawchuk Arena is expected to be closed for the entire 2019/2020 ice season to allow for abatement and remediation.

During summer maintenance, mould was discovered throughout the arena ceiling. Air quality tests were conducted by a third party environmental consultant. While air quality results are currently within safe parameters, without treatment, the mould may pose an increasing health risk for customers if untreated.

The City proactively reached out to health officials with Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living, to seek an opinion on our risk assessment. Provincial officials concurred with the City’s plan to abate and remediate before conditions worsened.

Ice allocations at all City-operated arenas are currently being reworked. River East Arena has opened early to allow the rescheduling of pre-season bookings made at the Terry Sawchuk Arena.
