When the doors open at 198 voting locations across Winnipeg at 8 a.m. on October 26, a key focus for election staff will be ensuring the voting process runs as smooth as possible for voters casting their ballots on Election Day.
Ensuring that happens takes a lot of planning and space at our election warehouse.
“For months we have been sourcing supplies and putting together over 3,000 envelopes, 1,500 transfer bins and hundreds of delivery packages for the voting locations,” said Konrad Krahn, who is responsible for election supplies and is also the City Archivist.
Getting all the supplies to each of the appropriate voting locations is no easy task. It involves strategically loading 15 large moving trucks, a process that can take up to an hour per truck, depending on the logistics.
“So much work has gone into planning the loading of the trucks to ensure they end up in the right locations with the right supplies on Election Day,” he said, adding that everything is checked multiple times to see if anything is missing.
While workers have turned their attention to Election Day now, from October 3 to 21 they were also focused on operating over 141 senior and personal care home polls, 11 hospital polls, 14 malls and university polls, and 15 community advance polls. Record setting advance voting turnout was possible because of their hard work.
