Our Community Safety Team is celebrating one year of helping to protect public safety through a compassionate approach.
“It’s hard to believe how far our team has come in one year,” said Bob Chrismas, Community Safety Team Lead.
It feels like yesterday we were training our initial group of safety officers. Today, there are 25 of us and we are seeing positive impacts on Winnipeg Transit and public spaces.
Safety Officers assist people experiencing homelessness, addictions, and mental health issues.
Since patrols started, officers have provided over 1,700 wellbeing checks — including over 20 life-saving overdose interventions through CPR or naloxone administration.
They have also provided over 200 safe rides to vulnerable residents, collaborated with the Winnipeg Police Service and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service on over 300 calls, and spent over 900 hours patrolling on buses.

Officers also work to build trust in the community — whether that’s offering someone a safe ride, or attending public events.
“The more visible we make ourselves the better,” said Chrismas.
Over time you begin to know the names and faces of people you’re checking on daily. Those relationships are incredibly meaningful to our officers.
The team will add 15 more officers over the next three years, including nine this spring. The added resources will help them expand its coverage across the Transit system.
Officers wear bright yellow uniforms labeled 'Safety Officer' on the back. Don’t hesitate to ask them for help if you need it.
