Homicide – Investigation: C22-170045

On July 29, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the 700 block of Sherburn Street for the report of a deceased male.

Officers from the West District attended and located the deceased adult male within the residence. Suspicious circumstances surround the incident and the death is being treated as a homicide.

The Homicide Unit assumed the investigation and have identified the victim as 74-year-old James MONAGHAN of Winnipeg. No suspects have been arrested.

Firearm/ Weapon – Arrest: C22-171181

On July 30, 2022, at approximately 11:30 p.m, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to 1 Forks Market Road for the report of a fight involving numerous individuals.

Officers from the Central District, including General Patrol and Community Support Unit members, attended to the CN Stage and Field when they observed 10-15 people flee the area. The involved parties were stopped; however, one male suspect continued to run from officers, holding what is believed to be a handgun and carrying a shoulder bag.

Robbery – Arrests: C22-168575

On July 27, 2022, at 10:30 p.m., North District General Patrol officers, with the assistance of the K9 Unit and AIR1, responded to the 1600 block of Main Street for a report of an assault. A passerby had observed a group of youths assaulting an older man on the ground.

Upon arrival, officers located a 68-year-old male victim and two male suspects. One male was arrested without incident, while the other attempted to flee on foot. The second suspect was uncooperative and was ultimately taken into custody with the assistance of a conducted energy weapon ("Taser").

Shooting – Investigation: C22-167649

On July 27, 2022, at 1:55 a.m., General Patrol officers, with the assistance of the K9 Unit, responded to the 500 block of Boyd Avenue for a report of a person who had been shot.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 13-year-old male and applied emergency medical care, including the use of a tourniquet. He was transported to a hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

It is believed that a group in the area had confronted the victim, at which time he was assaulted, including being shot.

Firearms – Arrests: C22-167632

On July 27, 2022, at 1:23 a.m., Central District General Patrol officers, with the assistance of the Tactical Support team, responded to a suite of an apartment building in the 400 block of Kennedy Street for a report of a female that was going to shoot someone.

Upon arrival, officers located two suspects and placed them under arrest.

Firearm – Arrest: C22-166912

On July 26, 2022, at 8:28 a.m., Central District General Patrol officers responded to the area of Toronto Street and Sargent Avenue for a report of a male walking in a back lane with a gun.

Soon after, officers located a male suspect in the area. He immediately ran but was taken into custody in the backyard of a residence in the 500 block of Beverley Street. A 9mm handgun with five rounds of ammunition was recovered nearby.

"Grandparent Scam" – Update/Public Advisory

The Winnipeg Police Service has recently seen a significant increase in local "grandparent scam" (also known as "emergency scam") reports – including 15 incidents over the past six days, with about $100,000 in losses.

The Financial Crime Unit is investigating these incidents.

The "grandparent scam" often involves an actor calling an elderly person and claiming to be a grandchild who is in serious legal trouble and needs money immediately. The caller sometimes cries, and there is often urgency and secrecy around the demands.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision – Investigation: C22-168097

On July 27, 2022, at 11:56 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 100 block of Inkster Boulevard for a report of a collision involving a dump truck and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, an adult female, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, an adult male, remained at the scene and has met with officers.

Hit and Run Motor Vehicle Collision – Arrest: C22165149

On July 24, 2022, at approximately 12:35 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the intersection of Pembina Highway and University Crescent for the report of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle.

Officers of the West District attended and located a 24-year-old male in the boulevard suffering from multiple injuries. Officers were advised that the involved vehicle and occupant had left the accident scene. The victim was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.

Public Advisory (Assault School Age Child): C22-165749

The Winnipeg Police Service is issuing a public advisory regarding an assault of a middle-school-age youth on the evening of July 24, 2022, in the Grace Hospital neighbourhood.

General Patrol officers met with the victim and her family, receiving details of the incident. The report was subsequently forwarded to the Child Investigations Unit to continue the investigation.
