City awards renovation grants to 20 community centres

Winnipeg, MB – Twenty City-owned community centres will receive funding for renovations through the City of Winnipeg’s Community Centre Renovation Grant Program (CCRGP).

“Community centres are important gathering spaces for residents of all ages and that’s why I was pleased to commit to more than doubling annual program funding during the last election,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Today’s announcement provides funding to support important upgrades and renovations that will ensure these spaces will continue to have positive impacts in the communities they serve.”

Winnipeggers invited to provide feedback in final phase of the Eastern Corridor Study

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is inviting residents to learn more and provide feedback about the approved Eastern Rapid Transit Corridor route through Point Douglas and Elmwood neighbourhoods and share their thoughts on the conceptual design, including the Louise Bridge replacement.

In April 2021, Council approved the Winnipeg Transit Master Plan (WTMP), and along with it the Eastern Rapid Transit Corridor route, which includes the location of the corridor’s river crossing as part of a replacement for the Louise Bridge.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Langside Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 10:31 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a garage fire in the 0 to 100 block of Langside Street.

When crews arrived at the scene they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage, with fire extending to the adjacent vacant house. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 10:57 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the garage and house and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Poplarwood Avenue and Balgona Road

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two significant fires this evening.

Poplarwood Avenue fire

At 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, WFPS responded to reports of a garage fire in the 100 block of Poplarwood Avenue.

When crews arrived at the scene they found a detached two-car garage engulfed in smoke and flames. An offensive attack was launched while crews also worked to protect the adjacent home.

Upcoming temporary road closures

Winnipeg, MB – There are several temporary road closures taking effect in the coming days:

Princess Street

Princess Street from McDermot Avenue to Notre Dame Avenue, will be closed for film production on Wednesday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. until Thursday, June 9 at 7 a.m.

King Street

King Street, from Notre Dame Avenue to McDermot Avenue, will be closed for film production on Friday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. until Saturday, June 11 at 7 a.m. A single lane will be maintained for access by emergency vehicles and Winnipeg Transit.

City of Winnipeg’s Summer Leisure Guide now available

Registration for summer activities begins on June 14

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s Summer 2022 Leisure Guide and Leisure Guide Swimming brochure are now available for viewing online. Registration for all summer activities begins Tuesday, June 14 at 8 a.m. for Winnipeg residents, and Thursday, June 16 at 8 a.m. for non-residents.

City releases Financial Status and Forecast Report to March–31,–2022

COVID-19 and other financial pressures cause shortfalls in City’s operating budget

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s first quarter financial status and forecast report is forecasting a projected deficit in the tax-supported operating budget (General Revenue Fund) of $53.9 million and an additional shortfall of $10.5 million in Transit as at March 31, 2022. The financial status and forecast report will be presented at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance on June 13, 2022

Public Works to conduct controlled burns in natural areas

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg will be conducting controlled burns in various natural areas between June 6 and June 17, weather conditions permitting. Controlled burns will be conducted in suitable wind conditions with appropriate fire guards in place.

Fire plays an important role in the preservation and restoration of prairies. Lack of fire allows weeds to invade these endangered plant communities. Controlled burns have been conducted by the City in Winnipeg's tall grass prairies since 1986.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service performs water rescue

Winnipeg, MB – At 6:06 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a male youth in the Red River, between Victoria Crescent and South Drive. The 9-1-1 caller reported that the person was holding on to a log as the river current carried him downstream.
