City services during a Canada Post work stoppage

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg would like to advise residents and businesses of changes to City services during a Canada Post work stoppage.

Residents are advised to contact 311 for information on how City services that normally use Canada Post will operate during a work stoppage.

City of Winnipeg hosts Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak Celebration

Winnipeg, MB – Today, Indigenous youth will be honoured and recognized at the Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak Celebration. Honourees include recipients of the Indigenous Education and Civic Pathways Award, Next Step Award, Post-Secondary Scholarships, and participants who have completed Career Week, internships and work placements across the civic system.

Small section of Westview Park closed for maintenance

Winnipeg, MB – A small section of Westview Park will be closed for landfill cap repair starting the week of October 22, 2018.

The multi-use park is on one of Winnipeg’s closed landfills. From 1875 to 1948, it accepted primarily ash and glass materials from the City of Winnipeg’s old garbage incinerator building.

The steep hill on the south side of the park is frequently used by people looking for a challenging workout, and over time this area has worn down to expose some of the waste.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service update

Academy Rd. Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:49 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic (WFPS) crews responded to reports of smoke in a restaurant in the 400-block of Academy Rd. Upon arrival, crews discovered the source of the smoke to be fire in the attic of the building. An offensive strategy was launched and after knocking down the interior ceiling, the fire was quickly extinguished.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.

Temporary closure of Regent Avenue West between Peguis Street and Starlight Drive this Weekend

Winnipeg, MB – The eastbound and westbound directions of travel on Regent Avenue West between Peguis Street and Starlight Drive will be temporarily closed from 6 p.m. on Friday, October 19 until 11 p.m., Sunday, October 21 for rail crossing repairs.

Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Motorists should allow for additional travel time, and use alternate routes in this area to reach their destinations.

Advance Voting Location Change

Winnipeg, MB – The Advance Voting poll scheduled to be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Indian & Métis Friendship Centre of Winnipeg (45 Robinson Street), has been changed to the Turtle Island Community Centre (510 King Street). Hours of operation remain the same.

The Senior Election Official would like to thank the Turtle Island Community Centre for accommodating the request for space on such short notice.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: McLaughlin Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 15, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of fire in a one and half-storey home in the 100 block of McLaughlin Avenue. Upon arrival, crews found extensive smoke throughout the residence with fire extending between the attic and the upper floor. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was extinguished.

All occupants had self-evacuated prior to crews’ arrival. Following medical assessments on scene, two individuals were transported to hospital in stable condition.
