Winnipeg, MB – Maryland Street Fire
At 6:23 a.m. on January 14, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey walk-up apartment complex in the 400 block of Maryland Street. A working fire was declared and crews launched an interior, offensive attack. While work to extinguish the fire was happening, crews simultaneously conducted a search of the building. Firefighters located one individual still in the building. This individual was transported to hospital in critical but has since been upgraded to stable.
Transit buses were brought on scene to provide shelter to the over 40 displaced residents. Paramedics provided care aboard the WFPS Major Incident Response Vehicle (MIRV). Following assessments, three additional patients were transported to hospital in unstable condition. No other injuries were reported.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team is on scene to provide resources to all displaced residents. Traffic in the area will remain impacted until crews complete their work on scene.
The cause of the fire will be under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.
Morley Avenue Fire
At 7:02 a.m. on January 14, 2019, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a single family home in the 100 block Morley Avenue. Upon arrival, crews launched an interior, offensive attack, bringing the fire under control by 7:28 a.m.
The lone occupant of the home had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. They were assessed on scene by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.
