Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Alfred Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:58 a.m. on June 25, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to a monitored alarm in a vacant four-storey apartment building in the 100 block of Alfred Avenue. Upon arrival on scene crews encountered a well-involved fire, with heavy smoke and flames. A defensive attack was launched as it was unsafe for crews to enter the structure. The fire was declared under control at 4:13 a.m. and at that point crews transitioned to an offensive attack to extinguish the remaining fire.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: St. John's Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 5:42 p.m. on June 22, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey single family home in the 300 block of St. Johns Avenue. Upon arrival, crews encountered smoke coming from the eaves of the home and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 6:00 p.m.

All occupants of the home self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

City celebrates grand opening of Kapyong Park with features remembering soldiers who fought in Battle of Kapyong

Winnipeg, MB – At an event this morning, Mayor Brian Bowman and Councillor Scott Gillingham, St. James, with members of the Second Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) and Mayor Kim Sungki of Gapyeong, South Korea, recognized the official grand opening of Kapyong Park following the addition of memorial features remembering soldiers who fought in the Battle of Kapyong during the Korean War.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Henderson Highway Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:15 p.m. on June 21, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in an 11-storey apartment block in the 1000 block of Henderson Highway. Once on scene, crews found a fire on a fourth floor balcony. It was quickly knocked down before it extended to the walls of the structure.

Evacuation of the building was not required. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, due to the improper disposal of a cigarette butt.

Taché Avenue to be temporarily closed this Monday

Winnipeg, MB – Northbound and southbound Taché Avenue between de La Cathédrale Avenue and Despins Street will be temporarily closed this Monday, June 24 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. for a special event.

Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route and to plan for additional travel time to reach their destinations.

Smith Street to be closed on special event dates this summer

Winnipeg, MB – Northbound Smith Street from Ellice Avenue to Notre Dame Avenue will be temporarily closed from 4 p.m. until 1 a.m. on the dates listed below for special events to be held in the Odeon Triangle park on Burton Cummings Theatre event nights.

Next Kid Mayor of Winnipeg Appointed

Winnipeg, MB – Sadie Armstrong has been selected by an external panel of judges as the next Kid Mayor of Winnipeg, Mayor Brian Bowman announced today.

“Congratulations Sadie on being selected as the next Kid Mayor of Winnipeg,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Thanks to everyone who submitted an application this year to become Winnipeg’s next Kid Mayor.”

The Kid Mayor initiative is in its second year. It was launched last year as a fun, educational initiative aimed at building a greater appreciation for and understanding of municipal government.
