City of Winnipeg celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

Winnipeg, MB – Today, City of Winnipeg employees will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. This day recognizes and honours the cultures of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples.

“It is an absolute pleasure to recognize the significant contributions Indigenous people have made to Canada, Manitoba, and Winnipeg on National Indigenous Peoples Day,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “It is a great opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the rich Indigenous culture and heritage that has formed part of our shared culture. Together, we celebrate today with Winnipeg’s First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.”

The City’s National Indigenous Peoples Day event will be held at 11:30 a.m. and will start with a welcoming prayer and smudge teaching by Elder Clarence Nepinak, followed by statements from dignitaries. There will be a variety of Indigenous dance, music and visual art performers.

In addition to an ongoing commitment to the Journey of Reconciliation, the City continues to carry out the following initiatives:

  • Implementation of Winnipeg’s Indigenous Accord, including the third annual signing ceremony of new partners held on June 18, 2019
  • Indigenous History Month employee workshops held during the month of June
  • Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak, the City’s Indigenous Youth Strategy
  • The 5 Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action related to municipalities
