Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Responds to Gallagher Avenue West Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:59 a.m. on September 17, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a garage fire in the 1-100 block of Gallagher Avenue West. Upon arrival crews encountered a well-involved fire which was threatening two neighbouring homes. The homes were evacuated and crews quickly launched an attack, declaring the fire under control at 3:36 a.m.

All eight occupants of the homes were assessed on scene by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Motion to Recommend Implementation of Road Construction Working Group Recommendations

Winnipeg, MB – A motion to be introduced at this morning's Executive Policy Committee meeting proposes to direct the Public Service to implement recommendations made earlier this year by the road construction working group Mayor Brian Bowman said today.

The road construction working group submitted its final report and recommendations at the end of August. Among the recommendations outlined in the report were better communication, expanded use of earlier tendering, and greater utilization of 24/7 construction.

Mandatory taxi pre-payment pilot to start September 30

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is launching a pilot beginning September 30 to determine if mandatory pre-payment will reduce fare disputes in taxis.

Between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., seven days a week, all taxi passengers will be required to pay a $10 deposit at the beginning of their trip, regardless of trip length. At the end of the trip, passengers will pay the remaining difference, or be refunded if the final fare is less than $10.

City of Winnipeg invites residents to come in and cool off during forecasted high heat

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg invites residents to come in and cool off in civic facilities during regular operating hours, as high temperatures are forecasted over the next few days.

City facilities that are normally open on weekdays and weekends are available to act as 'cooling areas' where the public may come in for relief from the heat and have access to drinking water.

Winnipeg, MB – At 1:22 a.m. on September 15, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a one and a half storey home in the 1100 block of Manitoba Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered flames coming from the home and heavy smoke conditions. An offensive attack was launched and crews had the fire under control by 1:48 a.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to Semple Avenue fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:19 p.m. on September 12, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a single family bungalow in the 100 block of Semple Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered flames coming from the home and heavy smoke conditions. An offensive attack was launched and crews had the fire extinguished by 8:03 p.m.

The lone occupant of the home was assisted to evacuate by neighbours prior to WFPS arrival at the scene. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Responds to Kate Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:33 a.m. on September 12, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two and a half storey multi-family house in the 0 to 100 block of Kate Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered a well-involved fire. Due to the heavy fire conditions, a defensive attack was launched. Once some of the flames were knocked down, crews were able to transition to an offensive attack, entering the structure to complete extinguishment of the fire. It was declared under control at 4:15 a.m.

Weekly Edmonton Street closure continuing through September for Downtown Winnipeg Farmers’ Market

Winnipeg, MB – An ongoing summer closure has been extended to accommodate the Downtown Winnipeg Farmers’ Market.

Edmonton Street will be closed between Portage Avenue and Graham Avenue every Thursday in September from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The market took place weekly throughout the summer, and was originally scheduled to conclude at the end of August. The final closure for this year will be September 26.
