City releases updated Financial Management Plan

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg has updated its Financial Management Plan, which is the City’s strategy for guiding financial decision-making, meeting long-term obligations, and improving its economic position and financial stability. The City will present its updated Financial Management Plan at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance today, October 11, 2019.

Plan to implement the Million Tree Challenge initiated by motions at EPC

Winnipeg, MB – At next week’s Executive Policy Committee meeting, two motions will be introduced by Mayor Bowman to initiate the Million Tree Challenge.

“With our tree canopy under threat by diseases such as Dutch elm disease and the emerald ash borer, we as a City need to do more to protect the trees we have and expand our reforestation efforts,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Our tree canopy is a great source of pride for many Winnipeggers and these motions will put us on track toward the implementation of the Million Tree Challenge.”

City crews continue to respond to snowfall

Winnipeg, MB – City crews will continue to plow collector streets and bus routes this morning, and spread salt on main routes as needed to improve traction on roadways throughout the day.

There are no winter parking bans currently in effect.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a house fire on Somerville Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 6:46 p.m. on October 10, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a house fire in a one-storey house in the 1100 block of Somerville Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered flames and smoke coming from the home. Crews launched an offensive attack, quickly declaring the fire under control at 7:10 p.m.

There were no evacuations required and no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Magnus Avenue and Pritchard Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 10:31 a.m. on October 10, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a garage in the 1500 block of Magnus Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered a fire in the garage, and power lines that had fallen in the area. Manitoba Hydro was advised. Crews launched an offensive attack, very quickly declaring the fire under control.

No injuries were reported.

At 10:37 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-family home in the 1600 block of Pritchard Avenue.

Eleven paramedics complete specialized Advanced Care training

Winnipeg, MB – At a graduation ceremony this morning, Mayor Brian Bowman, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Chief John Lane, and community partners celebrated the success of the City’s 11 new Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP).

The graduates completed a challenging three-year program, offered by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) consisting of classroom learning, as well as hospital and field training to achieve the highest level of paramedic education available in Manitoba.
