Winnipeg partners with Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg will be using a unique initiative to access the academic acumen and research capacity of Harvard University to help identify ways to reduce certain service demands on the Winnipeg Police Service, Mayor Brian Bowman announced today.

“Our city has a tremendous opportunity over the next several months to access a host of resources and research support to help us address a challenge that’s been a key focus of the Winnipeg Police Board’s current strategic plan,” said Mayor Brian Bowman.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to barn fire on St. Mary’s Road

Winnipeg, MB – At 4:06 p.m. on November 6, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of fire in a small barn-style shed located in the 3300 block of St. Mary’s Road.

Once on scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. An attack was launched, with crews using water tankers to shuttle water as the barn is outside of the City of Winnipeg water district.

The fire was declared under control at 4:59 p.m. The structure suffered significant damages and is expected to be a complete loss.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Hendon Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:45 a.m. on November 6, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an automatic alarm at an eight-storey apartment tower in the 100 block of Hendon Avenue. Once on scene, crews determined there was a small fire in a stove on the fifth floor and it was very quickly extinguished. Fire damage was contained to the suite of origin.

Evacuation of the entire apartment complex was not necessary. Paramedics on scene transported one patient to hospital in unstable condition.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to house fire on Sherburn Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:17 p.m. on November 5, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 800 block of Sherburn Street. Once on scene, crews learned that one person may be trapped inside the home. An offensive attack was immediately launched, while crews simultaneously searched the structure.

One individual was located inside the home. Paramedics transported the patient to hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.

First responders urge caution due to thin ice conditions on waterways

Winnipeg, MB – With temperatures dropping, residents are advised that thin ice conditions are present on Winnipeg waterways, including drainage ditches, culverts, streams, creeks, retention ponds, and rivers.

Parents and teachers are urged to speak to children and students about the dangers of waterways. As well, dog owners should keep their dogs on leash around the ice in order to prevent them from chasing geese onto the ice. The ice surfaces are thin and fragile, and falling into ice-cold water can be deadly.

Fiscal restraint continues to be a top priority for Executive Policy Committee

Winnipeg, MB – Today, Mayor Brian Bowman announced continuity for the existing Executive Policy Committee (EPC) membership, as fiscal restraint continues to be a top priority.

“The current EPC membership has worked hard to keep fiscal restraint as a top priority over the last year as we continue to grapple with new fiscal realities,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “With the multi-year balanced budget process commencing, fiscal discipline and restraint will continue to determine how our growing city can move forward with the priorities expected by Winnipeggers.”

Proposed changes to Winnipeg Police Pension Plan to save taxpayers millions annually

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is proposing amendments to the bylaw governing the Winnipeg Police Pension Plan for Council’s consideration which could save the City and taxpayers approximately $12 million annually. The proposed amendments would bring the police’s defined benefit plan more in line with other major Canadian police force pension plans and allow it to continue to provide a stable source of retirement income to the valued members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

City releases Financial Status Report and Forecast to September 30, 2019

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s third quarter financial status report and forecast is projecting a deficit in the tax-supported operating budget (General Revenue Fund) of $9.4 million, as at September 30, 2019. The latest financial status report and forecast has considered the impact of the October 2019 storm event because of its significance to the City’s year-end financial status. The City’s third quarter financial update will be presented at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance on November 8, 2019.
