Manitoba Legislative Building

This afternoon, the Winnipeg Police Service provided a safe work environment for Manitoba Legislative Security Officers to dismantle the structures located on the north grounds of the Manitoba Legislative Building.

Yesterday, police were on site in response to information that occupants were bringing in building materials to expand the north camp’s footprint by building a new tipi.

Drug Offences – Arrest: C22-229472

On October 3, 2022, at approximately 7:30 a.m., a West District General Patrol unit proactively attended a suite of an apartment building in the 800 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway to conduct a compliance check of a male bound by conditions of a Release Order.

Officers located an adult female in the suite, contrary to a no-contact condition. A search of the residence (conducted according to the Release Order) resulted in the seizure of many items, including the following:

Aggravated Assault – Update: C22-226016

Update:

The Major Crimes Unit has made an additional arrest in the shooting of a male (in his 50s) in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street on September 29, 2022.

On October 3, 2022, at approximately 4:15 a.m., a male suspect was taken into custody during an unrelated firearm incident in the 1400 block of Alexander Avenue (see the other media release from October 4, 2022).

Norman Leonard Thompson, a 20-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

- Aggravated Assault

He was detained.

Firearm – Arrest: C22-229426

On October 3, 2022, at 3:51 a.m., Central District General Patrol members responded to the 1400 block of Alexander Avenue for a report of a male with a gun inside a residence.

Soon after officers arrived, they observed a male and female leaving the house. The pair initially ignored police instructions but were safely taken into custody, and a sawed-off .22 calibre rifle was seized from the ground below them.

Sexual Assaults – Arrest: C22-217722

Update:

On September 20, 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service issued a public advisory after receiving reports from Winnipeg Transit about a male suspect causing disturbances and assaulting passengers on various bus routes during the morning commute.

The Sex Crimes Unit took over the investigation and identified a male suspect captured on CCTV causing disturbances and assaulting passengers between September 16 – 23.

Homicide – Update: C22-228764

As previously released:

On October 2, 2022, at 7:56 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service was notified of a deceased adult male at the Health Sciences Centre with suspicious injuries.

The male had been transported to the hospital by ambulance after a bystander found him unresponsive on the ground at 6:45 a.m. near Sherbrook Street and Cumberland Avenue.

His death has since been determined to be a homicide.

Update:

Homicide – Investigation: C22-228764

On October 2, 2022, at 7:56 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service was notified of a deceased adult male at the Health Sciences Centre with suspicious injuries.

Homicide – Update: C22-227027

As previously released:

On September 30, 2022, at 8:23 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 500 block of Balmoral Street for a report of suspicious circumstances.

Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male outside of a residence. His death is considered suspicious at this time.

Update:

Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation and determined the death to be a homicide. The deceased victim has been identified as a 16-year-old male of Winnipeg.

Motor Vehicle Collision/Drug Offences – Arrests: C22-228594

On October 2, 2022, at approximately 12:02 a.m., a North District General Patrol unit conducted a traffic stop of a truck travelling near Parr Street and Flora Avenue.

During the traffic stop, the male driver falsely identified himself and fled at a high rate of speed. He subsequently lost control of the truck, colliding with several unoccupied vehicles and a residence in the 500 block of Flora Avenue.

The driver attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody and transported to a hospital in stable condition, where he was treated and released.
