Update on collective bargaining with CUPE Local 500

Winnipeg, MB – Late last night, the City of Winnipeg (City) learned that the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 500 (CUPE) intends to take strike action beginning on Wednesday, October 12.

Over the past several months, the City has been actively engaged in collective bargaining with CUPE with the assistance of a conciliator appointed by the Manitoba Labour Board. In July, CUPE’s membership gave its bargaining committee a strike mandate.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire in a commercial building on Academy Road

Winnipeg, MB – At 6:14 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a commercial building in the 500 block of Academy Road.

At the scene, crews saw smoke coming from the building. Firefighters attacked the fire from outside until the building was safe to enter. Then a crew attacked the fire inside. The fire was declared under control at 6:47 p.m.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire. Everyone in a nearby building evacuated as a precaution. There were no injuries.

Advance Voting begins today

Election Day is Wednesday, October 26, 2022

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is advising that advance voting in the 2022 Municipal and School Boards Election officially begins today.

From October 3 – 21, eligible voters can cast their ballots in advance of Election Day at any one of the following locations, no matter where in the city they reside:

October 3 – 21

City Hall – Council Building – 2nd Floor, 510 Main Street

October 3 – 5

Canada Life Centre (Cityplace bridge) – 300 Portage Avenue

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Sargent Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 4:53 a.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 700 block of Sargent Avenue.

At the scene, crews saw heavy flames and smoke coming from the building. Firefighters entered the building to attack the fire. It was under control at 5:12 a.m.

Everyone who was inside the building got out safely. Paramedics treated one person and transported them to a hospital in stable condition.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Sutherland Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 6:36 a.m. on Friday, September 30, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire involving two vehicles in the 100 block of Sutherland Avenue.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles fully-engulfed in flames with the fire spreading to a two-storey commercial building. Crews extinguished the vehicle fires and launched an offensive attack to extinguish the fire in the structure.

Upcoming temporary road closures in the Downtown area in the coming days

Winnipeg, MB – There are a number of upcoming planned temporary road closures in the Downtown area in the coming days.

Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time use altnerate routes to their destinations while the closures are in effect, and download the Waze app in advance and use it for real-time traffic updates.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Logan Avenue and Barnes Street

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires.

Logan Avenue Fire

At 8:06 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, the WFPS responded to a monitored fire alarm in a single-storey industrial structure in the 1900 block of Logan Avenue.

When crews arrived at the scene, there was significant smoke in the structure which had triggered the sprinkler system. Crews were alerted to a machinery fire and an injured individual who had been helped outside by other building occupants.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Grassie Boulevard

Winnipeg, MB – At 10:55 a.m. on Monday, September 26, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 200 block of Grassie Boulevard.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found smoke and flames coming from the house. They launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 11:23 a.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Furby Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:43 a.m. on Monday, September 26, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a four-storey apartment building in the 400 block of Furby Street. The building is currently vacant, undergoing renovations.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found flames coming from the building. They launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 3:14 a.m. Damage was contained to the suite where the fire originated.
