Reminder: Public invited to open house for an update on Transcona Parks plans and upgrades

Winnipeg, MB - Tonight from 5pm to 8pm at 826 Regent Ave West (Canad Inn Transcona) the Transcona Ward Parks and Playgrounds Open House will be held that will provide residents with information and be an opportunity to receive feedback on the 2017 park renewal projects as well as projects planned for the future. On display will be information outlining six park renewal projects will take place in 2017 plus three more parks that will see a tree planting program.

Annual residential water meter reading program begins Wednesday, May 3, 2017

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg's annual water meter reading program begins Wednesday, May 3, 2017, and will continue until the end of August. City of Winnipeg staff will be visiting homes weekdays between 2:30 p.m. and dusk.

Each meter reader will have photo identification, a hand-held computer and a uniform with the City of Winnipeg logo. Please ask to see identification before allowing a meter reader into your home.

Insect Control Update 1

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is gearing up for another insect control season and began its environmentally friendly, aggressive mosquito larviciding program this week. Larviciding is the most effective approach to controlling mosquitoes, as it targets mosquito larvae in the aquatic stage before they emerge as adults.

Public invited to a workshop about the Bishop Grandin Walk Bike Bridge Over Pembina Highway project

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is gathering public input on the Bishop Grandin Walk Bike Bridge Over Pembina Highway project. Winnipeggers are invited to participate in a workshop on Thursday, May 11, 2017 to help shape the preliminary design.

The Bishop Grandin Walk Bike Bridge Over Pembina Highway will close a gap in one of Winnipeg's most prominent active transportation pathways by connecting the Bishop Grandin Greenway across the very busy and complex intersection at Pembina Highway and University Crescent at Bishop Grandin.

Mandate Letter Provided to Winnipeg's First Citizen Chair of the Winnipeg Police Board

Winnipeg, MB - A mandate letter has been provided to Mr. David Asper, the first citizen appointed Chair of the Winnipeg Police Board, and is now publicly available Mayor Brian Bowman announced today.

“I am very pleased Mr. Asper accepted the challenging and demanding leadership role of chairing the Winnipeg Police Board,” said Mayor Bowman. “And I want to thank Council for supporting his appointment at this week’s Council meeting.”

City supports creation of industry based safety program for self-insured employers in Manitoba

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg has partnered with SAFE Work Manitoba to develop an industry based safety program (IBSP) for self-insured employers. This program will facilitate collaboration between some of the largest employers in Manitoba, including municipal, provincial and Crown corporations.

The City is part of a group of large self-insured organizations that do not fully align to just one industry, and as such, its operations do not fall within an existing IBSP.

Lane closures on southbound Main Street causing downtown traffic congestion

Winnipeg, MB - Over the past several days, there has been issues with traffic congestion in the downtown area during rush hour. The current congestion is mainly caused by temporary lane closures on southbound Main Street between Portage Avenue and Graham Avenue. The lane closures on Main Street are expected to be in place until May 12.

In an effort to alleviate some of the congestion, the City will be installing additional signage near these lane closures to direct traffic to make the required lane changes in advance of the closure for a smoother transition.

"ReLeaf" for Winnipeg's Urban Forest Continues in Spring 2017

Winnipeg, MB - Trees Winnipeg is proud to continue the Winnipeg ReLeaf Tree Planting Program. Initially launched in 2015 as a pilot project with support from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the program is set to continue in spring 2017. Over 400 trees were planted during the pilot program in 2016. Trees Winnipeg will deliver the program in partnership with the City of Winnipeg and with volunteer support from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

Complete closure of St. Matthews Avenue from Goulding Street to Dominion Street

Winnipeg, MB - St. Matthews Avenue between Goulding Street and Dominion Street will be completely closed to vehicular traffic from Monday, May 1 until Friday, June 2 for road construction.

Pedestrian sidewalk access will be maintained while work is underway. Motorists should allow additional time to get to their destinations, and use alternate routes.
