Winnipeg, MB - Over the past several days, there has been issues with traffic congestion in the downtown area during rush hour. The current congestion is mainly caused by temporary lane closures on southbound Main Street between Portage Avenue and Graham Avenue. The lane closures on Main Street are expected to be in place until May 12.
In an effort to alleviate some of the congestion, the City will be installing additional signage near these lane closures to direct traffic to make the required lane changes in advance of the closure for a smoother transition.
The City’s Transportation Management Centre is monitoring the current congestion and has looked at altering signal timings to improve traffic flow. However, there are no beneficial opportunities for timing changes at this time as extending green time on Main Street will have a domino effect across the downtown and will create congestion on all other streets in the area, including Portage Avenue.
On Tuesday, during a software update of the Traffic Signals Management System, some intersections were temporarily disconnected from the signals system. This issue was fixed Tuesday afternoon and is no longer contributing to traffic congestion in the downtown.
The City thanks motorists for their patience and encourages all drivers to use the Waze app for alternate route suggestions and to receive real-time traffic and incident information directly from the City’s Transportation Management Centre and other drivers.
