City of Winnipeg spray pads to open for the first long weekend of summer

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is inviting citizens to enjoy community spray pads as they begin to open on the May long weekend, starting on Saturday, May 20.

“What a great way to kick off the first long weekend of summer!” said Mike Pagtakhan, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “We are lucky to have a number of affordable options for summer fun in our city, including a wide range of outdoor pools, spray pads and wading pools. I hope everyone will enjoy these amenities in the coming summer months.”

Drag queen story time holds court at Winnipeg Public Library

Winnipeg, MB - On Saturday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 31, Winnipeg Public Library will host Read By Queens, a family story time event led by local drag queens. Both Read By Queens story time will include picture book readings by the queens, followed by themed crafts and games.

Public invited to a town hall to discuss the South End Sewage Treatment Plant Hauled Liquid Waste Facility Closure and Gravel Road Maintenance

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is inviting residents to a town hall May 31, 2017 which will feature two presentations. The first is on the closure of the South End Sewage Treatment Plant Hauled Liquid Waste Facility, and the second on gravel road maintenance.

The City of Winnipeg will no longer be accepting hauled wastewater at the South End Sewage Treatment Plant as early as June 2017. After the closure, all hauled wastewater will need to be disposed of at the North End Sewage Treatment Plant.

Northbound and southbound Pembina Highway between Jubilee Avenue and Stafford Street completely closed this weekend

Winnipeg, MB - Northbound and southbound Pembina Highway between Jubilee Avenue and Stafford Street will be completely closed to vehicular traffic starting at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 19 until 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 23 for construction of the Southwest Rapid Transitway (Stage 2) project and Pembina Highway widening. Construction will take place around-the-clock during this closure.

City accepting applications for the OurWinnipeg Community Advisory Committee Membership

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is accepting applications for the OurWinnipegCommunity Advisory Committee membership. OurWinnipeg is the City of Winnipeg's municipal development plan that sets the vision for the next 25 years and provides direction in key focus areas. Advisory committee members will help shape the foundation of Winnipeg's future development priorities as the City undertakes the review of the plan.

Fairmont Road between Wilkes Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue temporarily closed for railway crossing repair

Winnipeg, MB - Fairmont Road between Wilkes Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue will be completely closed to northbound and southbound traffic starting at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 for a CN railway crossing repair. Fairmont Road will reopen at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2017.

Motorists should allow additional time to get to their destinations, and use alternate routes.

City crews begin annual grass mowing program to keep Winnipeg clean and green this summer

Winnipeg, MB - Parks and Open Space crews officially began the City's annual grass mowing program today to keep Winnipeg clean and green this summer.

Crews use about 175 mowers to mow boulevards, athletic fields, parks and other city owned green spaces. In total 2,484 hectares are mowed on a rotating basis with mowing cycles ranging from an average of 10 to 14 days, which equates to about eight to twelve mowing cycles during a season. For reference, one hectare is approximately the same size as a CFL football field.
