Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg will use DeltaGard 20EW for large scale adult mosquito control programs beginning this year, if fogging is required. Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency approved the full registration of DeltaGard 20EW on May 19, 2017.
DeltaGard 20EW will replace malathion which has been used in the city for over three decades for adult mosquito control. The City has been working closely with mosquito control suppliers in the past few years to bring new products to Canada. DeltaGard is a reduced risk product with lower application rates and reduced risk for the environment and public.
“I would like to thank the insect control branch for their foresight in planning the transition from Malathion to DeltaGard,” said Councillor Mike Pagtakhan, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “I would like to recognize the public service for taking the necessary steps several months ago to ensure a smooth transition.”
“DeltaGard will be an effective product in the fight against mosquitoes,” said Ken Nawolsky, superintendent of insect control. “As well, the new product supports our move to more environmentally friendly products as less pesticide will be applied to the environment.”
DeltaGard 20EW belongs to the pyrethroids family which is man-made versions of pyrethrins, natural insecticides from chrysanthemum flowers. Deltamethrin, which is the active ingredient of DeltaGard 20EW, has been used for 15 years world-wide and has the full recommendation by the World Health Organization Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES).
DeltaGard 20EW will be used in accordance with federally approved label directions by licensed pesticide applicators. If a fogging program is required in 2017, buffer zones will be respected and crews will ensure that the sprayer is not treating within 90 metres on each side of a registered property on the front street, side street and rear lane.
