Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service update: Edmonton Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 8:07 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to an alarm at a 12-storey apartment building in the 400 block of Edmonton Street. Upon arrival, crews found a working fire. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene, due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with an occupied apartment block.

Cross-Canada touring exhibit pîkiskwe-speak comes to Millennium Library

Winnipeg, MB – The cross-Canada touring art and film installation pîkiskwe-speak: An Invitation to Conversations in Reconciliation comes to the City of Winnipeg's Millennium Library starting Thursday, December 6, 2018.

Hosted by Winnipeg Public library, this collaborative arts project features the dramatic mixed-media triptych Lost My Talk, artwork by Alberta-based Indigenous artist Lana Whiskeyjack, and the award-winning documentary film Lana Gets Her Talk by Beth Wishart MacKenzie.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Waverley Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 1:18 a.m. on December 5, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of fire in a two and half-storey single family residence in the 200 block of Waverley Street. Upon arrival, crews launched an offensive attack to fight the fire and at 2:52 a.m. it was declared extinguished. The house suffered extensive water damage on the main floor and smoke damage throughout.

Motion to Recommend that Council Freeze Transit Fares for 2019

Winnipeg, MB – A motion to be considered at this morning's Executive Policy Committee will recommend that Council freeze 2019 transit fares at 2018 levels Mayor Brian Bowman announced today.

Under the Fees and Charges By-law, Council has authorized the Chief Financial Officer to increase annually any fee imposed by the City of Winnipeg by an amount equal to or less than the rate of inflation unless a Council resolution specifically states otherwise.

Two upcoming weekend closures of northbound and southbound Pembina Highway between Jubilee Avenue and Stafford Street

Winnipeg, MB – Northbound and southbound Pembina Highway between Jubilee Avenue and Stafford Street will be completely closed to vehicular traffic over the second and third weekends in December for demolition of the CN Bridge as part of the Southwest Rapid Transitway (Stage 2) project. Both closures, December 7 to 10 and 14 to 17, will commence at 8 p.m. on Friday and continue until 4 a.m. the following Monday.

Construction will take place around-the-clock during both closures.

City of Winnipeg Winter 2019 Leisure Guide Skating and Swimming brochures now available online

Winnipeg, MB – The Winter 2019 Leisure Guide Skating and Swimming brochures are now available exclusively online at winnipeg.ca.

Activity registration for all winter skating lessons and winter swimming lessons begins Tuesday, December 11 at 8 a.m.

Mayor Bowman Makes Additional Council Appointments

Winnipeg, MB – Additional Council appointments to various positions and roles were announced today by Mayor Brian Bowman.

“These appointments and the roles they play reflect the significant opportunities to engage with a diverse community as well as meet the needs of governing a growing city,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “These appointments fulfill important governance and leadership roles, and provide Council with strategic opportunities to meaningfully engage with residents, community groups, organizations, as well as other governments.”

Work On Preliminary 2019 City of Winnipeg Budget Underway

Winnipeg, MB – A budget working group has been established to begin preparing the 2019 preliminary City of Winnipeg operating and capital budget for tabling as early as February 2019 Mayor Brian Bowman and Councillor Scott Gillingham announced today.

The budget working group includes the chair of each Standing Policy Committee as well as the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Acting Deputy Mayor.

Downtown street closures for the AMM Gala fireworks display

Winnipeg, MB – The following temporary street closures will be in place on Tuesday, November 27 from 8:15 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. for the AMM Gala Fireworks display:

  • Southbound Carlton Street at York Avenue
  • Northbound Edmonton Street at York Avenue
  • Eastbound York Avenue at Edmonton Street

Pedestrian access will be maintained and motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes during this time.
