Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Gallagher Avenue Fire

Released: February 19, 2019 at 4:44 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At approximately 2:45 p.m. on February 19, 2019 Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of a fire in a one and a half storey, single-family house in the 2000 block of Gallagher Avenue. Once on scene, crews found a well-involved fire with heavy smoke and flames. An interior offensive attack was launched however due to deteriorating conditions crews, were forced to exit the structure and move to a defensive strategy. Crews expect to be on scene into the evening to fully extinguish the fire and all hotspots.

Initial reports indicated that individuals were trapped inside the home, but once on scene it was confirmed that all occupants of the home were able to self-evacuate. While doing the primary search of the home, crews located and rescued a litter of kittens and two adult cats. Two of the animals sustained injuries and required medical attention. The City of Winnipeg’s Animal Services Agency attended the scene to provide care. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire will be under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
