City releases final financial forecast for 2018

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg's final Financial Status Report for 2018 is forecasting a projected surplus in the tax-supported operating budget (General Revenue Fund) of $14.2 million, as at November 30, 2018. The City of Winnipeg’s financial update will be presented at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance on January 11, 2019.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Sargent Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 3:44 p.m. on January 5, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of fire in two-storey, mixed-use, commercial and residential building in the 700 block of Sargent Avenue. Upon arrival, crews found a working fire with flames extending into the walls of the building. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 4:56 p.m.

Occupants of the residential and business suites had self-evacuated prior to WFPS crews arrival. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Furby Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 2:47 p.m. on January 4, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a fire in a vacant three-storey building in the 500-block of Furby Street. The 911 report was made by one of WFPS’s Fire Inspectors who came across the scene.

Crews initiated an interior offensive attack and by 2:59 p.m. had the fire knocked down.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates are not yet known.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Manitoba Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 2:16 a.m. on January 4, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of fire in a residence in the 900 block of Manitoba Avenue. Upon arrival, crews found a working fire which had spread to the two neighbouring homes on each side.

Crews were able to launch interior offensive attacks in two of the three homes but the third, which was under construction, required a defensive attack. The fire in all three structures was declared under control at 3:37 a.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Vincent Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 7:01 p.m. on January 2, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of smoke in a side-by-side multi-family residence in the 0-100 block of Vincent Street. Upon arrival, crews found a working fire which had originated in the clothes dryer in one of the suites. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was very quickly extinguished. While damage from the flames was kept contained to the dryer, the home suffered smoke damage throughout.

Snowshoe Sundays start January 6 at Living Prairie Museum

Winnipeg, MB - Starting this Sunday, January 6, the Living Prairie Museum will be open for Snowshoe Sundays on the first and last Sunday of Janurary and February, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., snowpack permitting.

This is a great opportunity for members of the public to explore the prairie preserve in winter. Participants can visit the interpretive centre to learn all about the animals and plants that call the prairie home, and warm up by the fire.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Woodchester Bay Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 3:29 p.m. on December 30, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of fire in a single family residence in the 0-100 block of Woodchester Bay. Upon arrival, crews found a working fire in the basement of the home. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared extinguished at 4:01 p.m.

Occupants of the home had self-evacuated prior to WFPS crews’ arrival. Firefighters located one family cat deceased.

Winnipeg, MB - At 5:30 p.m. on December 29, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of fire in a vacant one and half-storey residence in the 600 block of Burrows Avenue. Upon arrival, crews mounted an offensive attack and the fire was declared under control at approximately 6 p.m. Crews then worked to locate and extinguish hot spots. Extensive smoke, fire, and water damage were noted.
