Committee Appointed to Recruit and Recommend City's Next Chief Administrative Officer

Released: March 21, 2019 at 9:39 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - Today, Mayor Brian Bowman announced the composition of a committee tasked with recruiting and recommending the appointment of the City of Winnipeg’s next Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

“Establishing a recruitment committee responsible for overseeing the recruitment process and recommending the city’s next CAO is the initial step in the recruitment process,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “The city’s CAO plays a critical leadership role in managing the city, and will be responsible for supporting Council as the city grows and continues to build over the coming years.”

The committee is inclusive of both Executive Policy Committee members as well as non-EPC members and includes:

  • Mayor Brian Bowman;
  • Councillor Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan);
  • Councillor Ross Eadie (Mynarski);
  • Councillor Sherri Rollins (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry); and
  • Councillor Matt Allard (St. Boniface).

The committee will conduct its work under guidance of the City of Winnipeg’s Human Resources department. A request for proposals seeking the assistance of an external consultant to assist with the recruitment process has been issued today and is available on the City of Winnipeg’s Materials Management webpage. The bid opportunity closes April 11, 2019.

The city’s current CAO, Doug McNeil, agreed to delay his retirement and continue in his role until the end of May in order to assist the City of Winnipeg together with the province of Manitoba through this year’s flood season.

The committee appointed to recruit the next CAO will make its recommendation to the Executive Policy Committee. Executive Policy Committee is then mandated by provincial legislation through The City of Winnipeg Charter to recommend appointments of statutory officers, including the CAO, to Council for their consideration.
