Winnipeg, MB - At 1:33 a.m. on December 24, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of fire in a single-storey residence in the 700 block of Burrows Avenue. Upon arrival, crews mounted an offensive attack and the fire was declared extinguished at 2:03 a.m. Extensive smoke, fire and water damage were noted.

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg and Manitoba Public Insurance are helping Winnipeggers to get home safely this New Year’s Eve by offering free transit after 7 p.m.

“The Free Ride program provides a free and responsible way for Winnipeggers get home after ringing in the New Year,” said Councillor Matt Allard, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “Thank you to Manitoba Public Insurance and Winnipeg Transit for helping keep our roads safe and enabling residents to make the right choice to not drink and drive.”

Grant program aims to improve lighting and enhance pedestrian safety in downtown areas

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is accepting applications to the Building Exterior Lighting Grant Program to encourage downtown building owners to invest in lighting that will create a more inviting and safe pedestrian environment. The grant program, which is part of a multi-year downtown public safety strategy, has allocated up to $300,000 over a two-year period to support improved exterior lighting on downtown building façades.

Give a gift to the environment this holiday season

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is reminding residents of ways to keep more items out of the landfill this holiday season.

The following items do not belong in recycling:

  • Ribbon and wrapping paper
  • Foam packaging (Styrofoam)
  • Gift bags
  • Plastic bags
  • Christmas lights, light strands

Changes coming to Handi-Transit in 2019

Winnipeg, MB - A new year will bring changes to Winnipeg’s Handi-Transit service including an updated scheduling system for improved service and a refreshed name to include more inclusive language.

In September 2017, Handi-Transit launched a campaign to choose a new, more inclusive name for the service, which solicited feedback from the community and stakeholders. Through this process and in consultation with the Handi-Transit Policy Advisory Committee, the name Winnipeg Transit Plus was chosen.

Dugald Road closed between Plessis Avenue and Ravenhurst Street on December 20 and 21

Winnipeg, MB - Dugald Road will be closed between Plessis Avenue and Ravenhurst Street for urgent water main work:

  • Closure begins Thursday, December 20, at 9 a.m.
  • Anticipated re-opening: Friday, December 21, at 10 p.m.

Local access will be maintained from the eastbound direction only. No through traffic will be permitted. No truck traffic will be allowed in the immediate area.

2019 Winter Speaker Series at the Living Prairie Museum announced

Winnipeg, MB - The Friends of the Living Prairie Museum Winter Speaker Series is set to begin January 15, 2019, and will take place from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. every other Tuesday. An interesting lineup of speakers will present information about their fascinating work.

Registration to attend the sessions begins on January 2, 2019. Friends of the Living Prairie Museum members may register in advance for all dates. Non-members may register two weeks before the event. Space is limited, so please call the museum to save your seats.

City awards renovation grants to five community centres

Winnipeg, MB - Today, Mayor Brian Bowman announced that five City-owned community centres will receive funding for renovations.

“Community centres are at the heart of where we come together as neighbours, friends, and families,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. "They're gathering places where residents celebrate many different milestones and aspects of life and it's important to support upgrades and renovations to our many different community centres across the city.”
