Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Selkirk Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 4:56 a.m. on May 25, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant one and a half storey house in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy flames and smoke. After knocking down flames from the entrance, crews were able to launch an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 5:43 a.m. The house sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service celebrates Paramedic Services Week

Winnipeg, MB – Paramedic Services Week 2019 is being held across Canada from May 25 to June 1. The week-long awareness week will help inform citizens about the variety of paramedical services provided by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS). To celebrate the week, the department’s paramedics will participate in a variety of community and educational activities starting on May 26.

The WFPS currently has 712 licensed paramedics who provide citizens with emergency medical services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

City of Winnipeg spray pads to open starting May 25

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg will be opening spray pads starting Saturday, May 25, 2019.

“Winnipeg has 21 spray pads locations across the city, making them easily accessible for all residents,” said Sherri Rollins, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “People of all ages can enjoy these family-friendly amenities throughout the summer months.”

On May 25, the following City spray pads will open:

Portage Avenue East to close to eastbound traffic from Main Street to Westbrook Street for water main renewal work

Winnipeg, MB – Portage Avenue East will completely close to eastbound traffic for water main renewal work from Main Street to Westbrook Street, beginning the morning of Monday, May 27 and continuing through Monday, July 8.

Eastbound traffic will be redirected to either Lombard Avenue or Pioneer Avenue. Street parking will be removed. Bike lanes and sidewalks will not be impacted.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Nairn Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 8:09 p.m. on May 23, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of a fire in a one and a half storey house in the 400 block of Nairn Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy flames and launched a defensive attack. Once some of the flames were knocked down, crews were able to gain access to the house to fight the fire from inside. After transitioning to an offensive attack the fire was declared under control at 8:53 p.m. The structure sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage.

Insect Control Update #2

Winnipeg, MB – On Sunday, May 26, 2019, weather permitting, the City of Winnipeg’s Insect Control Branch will commence its tree pest caterpillar control program starting at 9:30 p.m. in Insect Management Areas 10 (Central St. Boniface, Dufresne, North St. Boniface, Tissot) and 11 (Norwood East, Norwood West). The program will be targeting the spring and fall cankerworm and elm spanworm species. Spraying is scheduled to occur Sunday to Thursday evenings during this program.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Pulford Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 10:36 p.m. on May 22, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of a fire in two-storey, multi-family home in the 100 block of Pulford Street. Once on scene, crews launched an offensive attack and the fire was declared under control at 10:56 p.m. While crews were able to keep fire damage relatively contained to the area of origin, the structure sustained considerable smoke and water damage.

No occupants were in the home at the time of the fire. One firefighter sustained a minor injury while fighting the fire.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service asks residents to help reduce the risk of arson

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) reminds residents to take steps to reduce the risk of arson.

Each spring, the WFPS sees a significant increase in the number of fires, particularly those which are determined to be incendiary, or purposely set. In May 2018, there were 64 incendiary and suspicious fires.

Westbound Midwinter Avenue between Talbot Avenue and Brazier Street will be closed to traffic on May 23

Winnipeg, MB – Westbound Midwinter Avenue between Talbot Avenue and Brazier Street will be completely closed to traffic on Thursday, May 23 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for Bell MTS underground communications repairs.

Pedestrian access will be maintained. Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes during this time.

City crews begin annual grass mowing program to keep Winnipeg clean and green this summer

Winnipeg, MB – Beginning today, approximately 220 mowers will be out mowing boulevards, athletic fields, parks, and other City-owned green spaces. In total 2,489 hectares are mowed on a rotating basis with mowing cycles ranging from an average of 10 to 14 days, which equates to about eight to twelve mowing cycles during a season. For reference, one hectare is approximately the same size as a CFL football field.
