Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Furby Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:54 p.m. on July 8, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in three-storey, walk-up apartment building in the 400 block of Furby Street. Upon arrival crews found smoke and flames. After knocking down some of the flames from the exterior, crews entered the building and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 10:19 p.m. with crews able to confine it to the suite where it originated.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Stephens Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 3:22 a.m. on July 6, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a one and a half storey, single-family residence in the 100 block of Stephens Street. Upon arrival crews found fire coming from the home and launched an attack. It was declared under control at 4:10 a.m. The home suffered fire, smoke, and water damage.

All occupants of the home had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Furby Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 5:16 p.m. on July 5, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey, multi-family residence in the 500 block of Furby Street. Upon arrival on scene crews found smoke coming from a suite on the second floor. They launched an offensive attack and the fire was very quickly declared under control at 5:22 p.m.

No occupants were on scene at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

East Sidewalk on St. Vital Bridge Closing for Large Scale Sewer Main Repair

Winnipeg, MB – The sidewalk located on the east side of the St. Vital Bridge will be closed as early as Saturday, July 6, to accommodate a large scale repair of a sewer main. Sidewalk access on the west side of the bridge will be maintained.

Pedestrians should cross the street before the bridge. Cyclists should be prepared to share the road or look for alternate routes on the City’s bike map.

City disappointed with lack of progress in ATU negotiations

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is encouraging the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1505 (ATU) to get back to the negotiating table to continue collective bargaining between the parties. The City has made themselves available at any time next week, but ATU has not agreed to any further negotiating dates.

Newly renovated 104 year-old St. John’s Library now open

Winnipeg, MB - The newly renovated St. John’s Library officially reopened today. The library, which originally opened on June 2, 1915, now includes a 943 square foot addition with a bright, open reading area, an accessible entrance and washroom, a lift, and a 24-hour book return.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Flora Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 5:24 a.m. on July 5, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a one and a half storey home in the 600 block of Flora Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke coming from the windows of the home and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 5:41 a.m.

Occupants of the home had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews as a result of hearing the smoke alarm. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Mission Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 5:50 p.m. on July 4, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire at an industrial building in the 800 block of Mission Street. Upon arrival on scene crews found fire in the air filtration system on the exterior of the building, causing smoke to be drawn inside. An attack was launched and crews were very quickly able to bring the fire under control before it had a chance to extend to the structure's walls or roof.

Temporary closure of Louise Bridge between Sutherland Avenue and Nairn Avenue this weekend

Winnipeg, MB – The northbound and southbound directions of travel on the Louise Bridge between Sutherland Avenue and Nairn Avenue will be temporarily closed from 6 a.m. this Saturday, July 6 until 6 a.m. on Monday, July 8, for bridge bearing maintenance and sidewalk repair.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on the east sidewalk.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route and to plan for additional travel time to reach their destinations.

Recipients of Annual Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership Announced

Winnipeg, MB – Five recipients were awarded with the Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership during a ceremony at City Hall, Mayor Brian Bowman announced today.

Each of the five scholarship winners will receive a one thousand dollar scholarship in recognition of their consistent and outstanding dedication to making their community a better place to live and by solving community problems.

The scholarship is awarded annually, and this is the fourth year it has been awarded.
