Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Pritchard Avenue fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 5:12 a.m. on August 18, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two-storey house in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue. Initially, upon arrival on scene, crews launched a defensive attack while access to the house was gained. Once able to enter the structure, they transitioned to an offensive strategy. The fire was declared under control at 6:22 a.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: College Avenue fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 5:16 p.m. on August 17, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey multi-family home in the 500 block of College Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 5:38 p.m.

Occupants of the structure safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Mordaunt Street fire

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:52 p.m. on August 16, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a business in the 0-100 block of Mordaunt Street. Once on scene crews encountered a vehicle fire in the attached garage. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was quickly extinguished.

All occupants of the business self-evacuated from the structure prior to the arrival of crews. Two individuals were assessed by paramedics on scene and transported to hospital in unstable condition.

Two downtown streets closed to traffic this weekend

Winnipeg, MB – A section of Balmoral Street and Colony Street will be closed to traffic this weekend to facilitate paving operations.

The affected roadways are:

  • Southbound Balmoral Street between Qu’Appelle Avenue and Ellice Avenue
  • Northbound Colony Street between Webb Place and Ellice Avenue

Both will close tomorrow, Saturday, August 17, at 7 a.m. and will reopen Sunday, August 18, at 6 p.m.

While motorists must use alternate routes, pedestrian access will be maintained.

Temporary closure of Louise Bridge between Sutherland Avenue and Nairn Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – The northbound and southbound directions of travel on the Louise Bridge between Sutherland Avenue and Nairn Avenue will be temporarily closed from 6 a.m. this Monday, August 19 until 6 a.m. on Monday, September 2, for maintenance work.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on the east sidewalk.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow additional travel time to reach their destinations, and use alternative routes such as Provencher Boulevard and Redwood Avenue.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Hendon Avenue & McLeod Avenue Fires

Winnipeg, MB – At 11:13 p.m. on August 13, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an automatic alarm at an eight-storey apartment tower in the 100 block of Hendon Avenue. Once on scene, crews determined there was heavy smoke coming from a suite on the seventh floor. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene, due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with an occupied apartment block. Crews initiated an offensive attack and at 11:55 p.m. the fire was declared under control.

City of Winnipeg offering free water quality testing for residents with lead pipes

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is offering free water quality testing for residents who may have lead water pipes, as the Government of Canada has recently reduced the maximum allowable lead level in drinking water to 0.005 mg/L.

Lead is a common, natural metal found throughout the environment. Lead can be harmful if too much of it enters the body. Pregnant women and children are most at risk of the effects of lead.

Waverley Underpass project area at Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue will be closed this weekend

Winnipeg, MB – The Waverley Underpass project area at Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic this weekend from Friday, August 16 at 5:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday, August 19. This will allow for the preparation needed to move northbound and southbound traffic from the detour road through the newly constructed underpass on Monday morning.
