Waverley Underpass project area at Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue will be closed this weekend

Released: August 12, 2019 at 11:55 a.m.
Following the weekend closure, traffic will re-route through the newly constructed underpass while construction of the remaining road works continue

Winnipeg, MB – The Waverley Underpass project area at Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic this weekend from Friday, August 16 at 5:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday, August 19. This will allow for the preparation needed to move northbound and southbound traffic from the detour road through the newly constructed underpass on Monday morning.

The closure boundaries for this weekend are:

  • Taylor Avenue will be closed from the Re-Fit approach to Cambridge Street
  • Waverley Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Wilkes Avenue to Mathers Avenue
  • Saturday afternoon and evening only, from approximately 13:00 to 21:00, no through traffic on Hurst Way / Wilkes Avenue at Waverley Street

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the new multi-use path on the east side of Waverley Street throughout the weekend.

Immediately following this weekend’s closure, traffic will begin operating through the newly constructed underpass. Motorists will no longer experience train delays, however major roadworks are still required to remove the detour road and reconstruct a portion of the Taylor Avenue intersection.

Temporary turning movement restrictions will be in place at the Taylor intersection following the weekend closure. Turning restrictions include:

  • Eastbound Taylor at Waverley, no left turn
  • Northbound Waverley at Taylor, no left turn
  • Southbound Waverley at Taylor, no left turn
  • Limited through lanes (intermittent lane closures throughout site)

Additional details of the full weekend closure and underpass opening can be found on the project website.

Motorists can continue to expect construction related delays after the weekend closure, and should use alternative routes such as Kenaston Boulevard and Pembina Highway.

Construction is expected to be completed in November 2019 and landscaping will be completed in spring 2020.
