City of Winnipeg launches Community Safety and Crime Prevention Program

Winnipeg, MB – Today, City Council approved the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Program. The program will provide funding to community groups to strengthen local crime prevention and community safety efforts by promoting the exchange of information between residents, and helping build closer relationships between communities and the Winnipeg Police Service.

Downtown lane closures this weekend for road construction

Winnipeg, MB – Southbound Memorial Boulevard, from Portage Avenue to York Avenue, and westbound St. Mary Avenue, from Vaughan Street to Memorial Boulevard, will be temporarily closed this weekend starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, September 28 until 7 p.m. Sunday, September 29 for road reconstruction.

Motorists should allow additional travel time to get to their destinations and use alternate routes.

Northbound King Street closed this weekend for Nuit Blanche

Winnipeg, MB – Northbound King Street between Bannatyne Avenue and William Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from Saturday, September 28 at 4 p.m. until Sunday, September 29 at 2 a.m., for Nuit Blanche. Pedestrian access will be maintained, and area businesses will not be affected by the closure.

Bond rating meetings provide opportunity to emphasize commitment to fiscal discipline

Winnipeg, MB – Meetings with international bond rating agencies Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s next week in New York will provide the City of Winnipeg with an opportunity to underscore an ongoing commitment to fiscal discipline Mayor Brian Bowman and Councillor Scott Gillingham (St. James), Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance announced today.

Mayor Bowman and Councillor Gillingham will be in New York from September 29 until October 4. Joining them on the trip will be Michael Ruta, Interim Chief Administrative Officer.

Residents invited to provide feedback on St. James area parks and recreation options

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is inviting residents in the St. James area to provide feedback on options for allocating a proposed $1.4 million towards parks and recreation improvements in the neighbourhood to meet the needs of the community.

Proposed funding is intended to provide new, enhanced, or refurbished park and recreation amenities, including trails, lighting, security and greenspace, along Sturgeon Creek in the vicinity of 244 Hamilton Ave. (former Vimy Arena) in the St. James neighbourhood.

Northbound and southbound Waverley Street closed this weekend between Lake Crest Road and Scurfield Boulevard for intersection paving operations

Winnipeg, MB – Northbound and southbound Waverley Street between Lake Crest Road and Scurfield Boulevard will be closed this weekend starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, September 28 until 10 p.m. Sunday, September 29 for paving of the Waverley/Bishop Grandin intersection.

Right hand turning yields on northbound and southbound Waverley Street will remain open during the closure. Access to the auto dealerships will be maintained.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a fire on Manitoba Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 1:36 a.m. on September 24, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in the rear of a one storey, single-family home in the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered flames coming from the rear of the house with the fire extending to a neighbouring one-and-a-half storey house which was determined to be vacant.

Crews launched an offensive attack and the fire in both houses was declared under control at 2:04 a.m. Both structures suffered significant damage.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Mapleton Drive

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:15 p.m. the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a single family bi-level home in the 100 block of Mapleton Drive. Upon arrival crews encountered heavy fire conditions and initiated an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 9:34 p.m. The home suffered significant damage.

One occupant who was in the home at the time of the fire self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Responds to Fire on William Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 12:44 p.m. on September 23, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two-storey house in the 500 block of William Avenue. A WFPS member was passing by when he saw smoke and called 911.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the house. Crews launched an offensive attack and the fire was declared under control at 1:45 p.m.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Powers Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 1:30 a.m. on September 23, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey, multi-family home in the 200 block of Powers Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered a well-involved fire with significant flames and smoke coming from the home. Crews launched a defensive attack but once flames were knocked down were able to transition to an offensive attack, fighting the remaining fire from the inside of the home. The fire was declared under control at 2:09 a.m.
