Winnipeg, MB – At 1:30 a.m. on September 23, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey, multi-family home in the 200 block of Powers Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered a well-involved fire with significant flames and smoke coming from the home. Crews launched a defensive attack but once flames were knocked down were able to transition to an offensive attack, fighting the remaining fire from the inside of the home. The fire was declared under control at 2:09 a.m.
All occupants of the house safely self-evacuated prior to crew arrival.
During the response, an activated power line fell on a responding fire engine. Manitoba Hydro responded and safely removed the power line. One firefighter was struck by the power line but was not injured. One other firefighter was assessed on scene after falling ill but was not transported to hospital. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. There are no damage estimates at this time.
