City of Winnipeg recalling employees in preparation for resumption of Transit service

Winnipeg, MB – Due to a steady increase in Transit ridership over the past few weeks, the City of Winnipeg will immediately begin recalling the approximately 120 Winnipeg Transit Operators and 41 Operators-in-Training who were temporarily laid off to prepare for the resumption of summer Transit service.

Effective Sunday, Aug. 2, 2020, Winnipeg Transit will be returning to a regular summer schedule, with full weekday service set to resume on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020 following Terry Fox Day on Monday, Aug. 3.

Registration for swim & fitness blocks for Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex & Pan Am Pool now open

Winnipeg, MB – Starting today, you can register for two-hour public swim, lap swim and fitness blocks at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex and Pan Am Pool.

Both facilities are set to partially re-open on Monday, July 20 and will operate with limited access to the fitness equipment, walking tracks, and pools. The re-opening of these facilities will build on the systems implemented for outdoor pool operations, including reduced capacity, and increased cleaning schedules, among other measures.

Stretch of St. James Street to temporarily close for rail crossing repairs

Winnipeg, MB – St. James Street will temporarily close tomorrow between Saskatchewan Avenue and Dublin Avenue for weekend rail crossing repairs.

The roadway will be fully closed from 6 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, July 17, through 9 a.m. Monday, July 20.

Motorists must use alternate routes to access adjacent streets and are encouraged to plan their trip ahead of time.

Mayor Bowman Awards Recipients of Mayor's Scholarship for Community Leadership

Winnipeg, MB – During a virtual reception today, Mayor Brian Bowman awarded this year's five winning recipients of the Mayor's Scholarship for Community Leadership.

“The annual presentation of the Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership is a reminder of the inspiring work being done by Winnipeg’s young people,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “It is always gratifying to acknowledge this great work but especially against the backdrop of the global pandemic since those graduating this year had a much different experience than ever before.”

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Toronto Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 11:02 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a vacant house on fire in the 500 block of Toronto Street.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke coming from the home. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 11:31 a.m.

Crews searched the house and confirmed there were no occupants inside. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and did not require transportation to hospital.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Balmoral Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 4:25 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey home in the 500 block of Balmoral Street.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy flames coming from the home. Crews launched a defensive exterior attack until they could safely transition to an offensive interior attack. The fire was declared under control at 4:59 a.m.

Emergency closure at Assiniboine Forest

Winnipeg, MB – A large portion of the Assiniboine Forest is temporarily closed due to dangerous coyote activity.

The closure affects the area between Corydon Avenue and Grant Avenue, from Chalfont Road to the west border of Tuxedo Golf Club.

It comes after numerous reports of coyotes exhibiting predatory, stalking behaviour and will remain in effect indefinitely under orders by Manitoba Conservation.

Sheep coming baaaaack to Living Prairie Museum

Winnipeg, MB – A flock of hungry sheep will soon return to Winnipeg's Living Prairie Museum for their second year on an unofficial maintenance crew.

This continues a pilot program launched last year that aimed to test the feasibility of grazing sheep as a means of vegetation management. The Living Prairie Museum is one of the few remaining areas still occupied by native tall grass prairie.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a fire on Selkirk Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey, multi-family building in the 100 block of Selkirk Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered flames and smoke coming from the building. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 8:21 p.m.

All occupants self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. Crews searched the building to confirm everyone was out of the building. No injuries were reported.
