Open Streets to remain in effect until September 7

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is reminding residents that the 10 Open Streets (Enhanced Sunday/Holiday Bicycle Routes) will remain open until September 7, 2020, after which time only the four Sunday/Holiday Bicycle Routes will remain in effect on Sundays and holidays only.

Beginning on Sunday, September 13 until Monday, October 12 the following routes will limit motor vehicle traffic to one block from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Sundays and holidays:

City recognizes completed expansion at Optimist Park

Winnipeg, MB – Mayor Brian Bowman, Councillor Sherri Rollins, and Councillor Scott Gillingham participated in a ribbon cutting today to recognize the expansion of Optimist Park in the St. James ward. The expanded park features a new full-sized soccer field, playground, parking lot, monument relocation, and fencing.

City employee tests positive for COVID-19

Winnipeg, MB – A City of Winnipeg employee in the Public Works Department has tested positive for COVID-19. The employee, who primarily works in areas to which the public does not have access and who does not have a public-facing job, is self-isolating as per provincial health guidelines.

For privacy reasons, we will not be releasing further details regarding the employee or their condition. The City wishes the employee a safe and speedy recovery.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Portage Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 1:32 p.m. on September 1, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a monitored alarm in a three-storey commercial building in the 600 block of Portage Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found the building’s sprinkler system had activated, knocking down the bulk of the fire. Firefighters worked to extinguish hot spots and ventilate the building.

One patient was assessed on scene by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to two afternoon fires

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:09 p.m. on August 30, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two-storey house in the 600 block of Banning Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews launched an offensive attack and the fire was very quickly brought under control.

A search of the house was conducted and no occupants were located. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.

Statement From Mayor Brian Bowman Regarding Next Week's Emergency Meeting of City Council

Winnipeg, MB – Statement from Mayor Bowman:

“We have added another item to the agenda for the Emergency Meeting of City Council on August 31, 2020: the extension of property and business tax deferrals until the end of November.

We know that the ongoing global pandemic continues to have a detrimental economic impact on numerous sectors of the economy, and that the Conference Board of Canada is now predicting that economic activity will not return to pre-COVID-19 levels until the second half of 2021.

Lane closures in effect this weekend

Winnipeg, MB – The following lane closures will be in place this weekend.

Ferry Road between Bruce Avenue and Ness Avenue will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic from 7 a.m. on Saturday, August 29 until 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 30 for sewer work. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

The Harry Lazarenko Bridge from Hespeler Avenue to Redwood Avenue will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic from 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 29 until 6 a.m. on Monday, August 31 for bridge maintenance. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Elm Bark Beetle Control Program begins

Winnipeg, MB – The City’s Elm Bark Beetle Control Program will begin Monday, August 31, 2020, weather permitting.

The program intends to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease (DED) by controlling the beetles that carry the disease.

It will begin in Insect Management Areas 25 (Beaumont, Crescent Park, Maybank, Parker, Point Road, Wildwood), 31 (Crescentwood, North River Heights, Wellington Crescent), 33 (Lord Roberts, River-Osborne, Riverview), and 47 (Inkster-Faraday, Luxton, St. John’s, St. John’s Park).

Face masks required in City-operated facilities and vehicles, including onboard Transit vehicles

Winnipeg, MB – As part of our commitment to ensure the health and safety of our residents and employees, effective Saturday, August 29, 2020 the City of Winnipeg is requiring that all individuals entering City-operated facilities or using City vehicles, including Winnipeg Transit or Winnipeg Transit Plus, must wear a face mask as a means to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
