City awards renovation grants to fifteen community centres

Winnipeg, MB – Fifteen City-owned community centres will receive funding for renovations through the City of Winnipeg’s Community Centre Renovation Grant program (CCRGP).

“The importance of community centres has been evident this year, as we have all missed the activities, programs and togetherness they offer,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “As we move into a new year, I’m pleased that 15 of our existing centres will be getting the renovations they need to make these spaces accessible and updated, so Winnipeggers can enjoy them for many years to come.”

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Redwood Avenue and Simcoe Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:55 a.m. on December 20, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a monitored fire alarm in a two-storey house in the 400 block of Redwood Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 4:10 a.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a house fire on Victor Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 11:53 a.m. on December 19, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey house in the 300 block of Victor Street.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke coming from the home and launched an offensive attack. Due to worsening conditions, they trasitioned to a defensive attack for a short time before re-entering the structure to fight the fire from the inside. The fire was declared under control at 12:30 p.m.

Temporary closure of Regent Avenue West between Peguis Street and Starlight Drive this Sunday

Winnipeg, MB – The eastbound direction of travel on Regent Avenue West between Peguis Street and Starlight Drive will be temporarily closed from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 20 for rail crossing repairs.

Pedestrian access will be maintained; however, motorists must use alternate routes while this road closure is in effect.

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is reminding residents of ways to keep more items out of the landfill this holiday season.

The following items do not belong in your recycling:

  • Ribbon and wrapping paper
  • Foam packaging (Styrofoam)
  • Gift bags
  • Plastic bags
  • Christmas lights, light strands
  • Toys
  • Disposable cutlery and dishes

Controlled Dutch Elm Disease burn starting soon

Residents reminded to keep distance from work areas

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s annual Dutch Elm Disease (DED) burn program is scheduled to begin the week of December 21, 2020.

Burns occur at riverside locations where trees cut down due to Dutch elm disease cannot be accessed by vehicle for removal. The controlled burns are attended by crews at all times and conducted according to permits issued by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. All burns are subject to weather conditions.

Preliminary 2021 Balanced Budget Update Adopted by Winnipeg City Council

Winnipeg, MB – At a Special Meeting of Council today, the preliminary 2021 Balanced Budget Update for the City of Winnipeg was adopted.

“I’m pleased to see the 2021 Balanced Budget Update adopted by Council so that millions of dollars in supports can flow toward the City’s response to the pandemic,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “The 2021 Balanced Budget Update provides a balanced, sustainable fiscal blueprint to help guide our city through the uncertainty caused by the pandemic.”

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a house fire on Beverley Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 12:13 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a house fire in the 500 block of Beverley Street.

When crews arrived on scene, flames and smoke were coming from the home. Crews launched a defensive attack, transitioning to an offensive attack as conditions improved. The fire was declared under control at 1:35 p.m.

Crews searched the home and confirmed there was no one inside. No injuries were reported. Occupants of neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution.
