Residents reminded to keep distance from work areas
Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s annual Dutch Elm Disease (DED) burn program is scheduled to begin the week of December 21, 2020.
Burns occur at riverside locations where trees cut down due to Dutch elm disease cannot be accessed by vehicle for removal. The controlled burns are attended by crews at all times and conducted according to permits issued by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. All burns are subject to weather conditions.
The DED burn program is scheduled to begin December 21, 2020 and is expected to conclude by March 31, 2021.
As burn sites are adjacent to parks and trails frequented by pedestrians and cyclists, Winnipeggers are reminded to keep a safe distance from the worksites and refrain from disturbing wood piles and debris.
Winnipeggers are also reminded that, in accordance with the Forest Health Protection Act and to protect the urban forest from Dutch elm disease, transporting and storing untreated elm wood is prohibited.
