Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Elkhorn Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 10:11 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in two-storey townhouse building in the first 100 block of Elkhorn Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the structure and launched an offensive attack. Due to worsening conditions, crews were forced to exit the structure and transition to a defensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 11:08 a.m.

Change your clock, check your smoke alarm batteries

Winnipeg, MB – On Sunday, March 14, 2021 at 2 a.m., the clocks will spring forward to mark the beginning of daylight savings time. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) reminds residents to check the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms and test them when you change your clocks this weekend.

If you are purchasing a smoke alarm or a carbon monoxide alarm, consider purchasing an alarm that detects both smoke and carbon monoxide.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Rillwillow Place

Winnipeg, MB – At 8:21 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in the 0-100 block of Rillwillow Place.

When crews arrived on scene there was smoke coming from the home. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 8:47 a.m.

All occupants safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. Crews transported one person to hospital in unstable condition.

No damage estimates are available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to injured individual on Girton Boulevard

Winnipeg, MB – At 8:41 a.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of an injured individual incapacitated at a construction site in the 100 block of Girton Boulevard.

When crews arrived on scene, they found the injured construction worker at the bottom of the excavated site. The Technical Rescue Task Force secured the patient into a rescue basket and used a rope system anchored to a WFPS aerial ladder truck to hoist the patient from the site.

City of Winnipeg marks 100 years of women in civic government

Winnipeg, MB – Today, to mark International Women’s Day, Speaker Devi Sharma, Councillor for Old Kildonan, unveiled a photo display celebrating a century of women on Winnipeg City Council. The piece will be hung in the Susan A. Thompson Building at a later date.

2021 marks 100 years since the inauguration of Jessie Kirk, the first woman elected to Winnipeg’s City Council. Since then, Winnipeg elected its first woman Mayor, Susan A. Thompson, in 1992, and its first woman Speaker of Council, Devi Sharma, who was elected to the role of Speaker in 2013.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Burrows Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:53 a.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half storey house in the 600 block of Burrows Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke in the structure and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 8:16 a.m.

Occupants of the house self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One individual was assessed by paramedics on scene and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
