The Winnipeg Police Service K9 Unit has played an important role in public safety since it was established in 1971. Working alongside their handlers, police service dogs assist in locating missing persons, tracking suspects, detecting evidence, and helping to keep officers and the public safe.
Their work is demanding — physically and mentally. Over the course of their careers, these dogs develop exceptional skill and loyalty, but they can also experience strain and injuries not typically seen in household pets.
To help support their wellbeing, both during active service and after retirement, the Winnipeg Police Service Canine Fund was created. The fund provides:
- Protective ballistic vests for working dogs – These specialized vests, which cost approximately $5,000 each, are not covered through standard equipment budgets.
- Veterinary care, medication, and food assistance for retired police service dogs – After retirement, many of the dogs continue to live with their handlers and their families. Due to the physical demands of their work, some require ongoing medical care to ensure they can enjoy a comfortable and dignified retirement.

One of the primary fundraising efforts supporting the Canine Fund is the annual **WPS K9 Unit Calendar.
