The 2024 Statistical Report offers a snapshot of the incidents and interactions reported to the Winnipeg Police Service over the past year. It provides valuable insight and informs police priorities and prevention efforts.
This past year, we have seen promising trends. Total crime volume decreased (-0.8%) for the second year in a row, with a sharper decline in total crime severity (-5.2%). However, it’s important to keep in mind that numbers alone can never tell the full story.
Calls for service remain elevated (averaging more than 2,000 calls per day) with check-wellbeing continuing as the top citizen-generated event for the fifth year in a row. Some additional highlights include:
- Violent crime volume decreased (-1.4%) for the first time in four years, along with the first meaningful decrease in violent crime severity (-5.0%) in over a decade.
- Property crime decreased (-2.3%) for the second year in a row, though shoplifting continued to trend upward.
- West District saw the largest increase (+8.2%) in total crime volume, while Central District – including both Downtown and Portage Avenue zones) – experienced notable decreases (-9.5%).
- Crime clearance rates improved (+2.4%) for the second consecutive year.
In the report, Chief of Police Gene Bowers remarked: “Community safety is at the core of everything we do, but it is simply not possible for us to improve the safety and wellbeing of our community on our own. Collaboration and relationships with partner agencies, with community stakeholders, and most importantly, with the people of Winnipeg is central to creating a vibrant and safe city that we are proud to call home.
