Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service invites residents to participate in Fire Prevention Week, October 9 to 15

An escape plan can save your life in an emergency

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) invites all residents to mark Fire Prevention Week, October 9 to 15, by creating and practicing home escape plans with your household. This year’s theme is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.” In a fire or carbon monoxide emergency, ensuring your household can safely and quickly evacuate is critical for life safety.

“Don’t wait until an alarm sounds in your home to think about how you and your family will get out. Creating a home escape plan now and practicing it with your family can ensure everyone is safe in the event of an emergency,” said Christian Schmidt, Fire & Paramedic Chief, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

Smoke Alarm for Every (SAFE) Family program

Having a working smoke alarm is the best way to ensure you and your family can escape in the event of a fire. Homeowners without working smoke alarms may be eligible to have one installed for free through the SAFE Family program.

Community events

This week, WFPS has teamed up with Canadian Tire to promote the importance of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and other fire and life safety equipment by hosting booths inside a number of Canadian Tire stores throughout the city. Members of the public can talk with WFPS representatives about these important devices, how to test them, and where in a residence to install them at the following locations:

Fire drills for schools

On Wednesday, October 12, schools in Winnipeg are encouraged to practice fire drills, promote fire safety and provide tips on fire prevention to students.

Fire Paramedic Station open houses

On Saturday, October 15, from noon to 4 p.m., Winnipeggers and their families are invited to attend open houses at their local fire paramedic stations. Every WFPS station will be open to visitors to get to know their local first responders and learn about home escape plans and fire prevention.
