Homicide – Investigation: C22-89437

Update:

The Homicide Unit took over an investigation regarding an adult male who was shot and killed inside a hotel bar in the 300 block of Smith Street shortly after midnight on May 1, 2022.

The deceased victim has now been identified as Ryan Mitchell SPENCE, 39, of Winnipeg.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision – Arrest: C22-89503

Update:

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Traffic Division has now identified and charged the driver involved in a fatal motor vehicle collision at Bond Street and Kildare Avenue West during the early morning hours of May 1.

Tyler Scott GOODMAN, 28, of Winnipeg, has been charged with the following offences:

Commercial Robbery – Arrest: C22-89481

On May 1, 2022, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a commercial robbery at a hotel in the 200 block of Main Street.

A male in his twenties entered the front lobby while wielding an axe in front of staff. The employees retreated to safety, and the suspect proceeded to steal cash, then fled on foot.

General Patrol Units and the Tactical Support Team conducted an area search; the Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation.

Cryptocurrency Scams Advisory

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) would like to advise the public of a recent increase in cryptocurrency investment scams. These scams promise an incredible financial return on investment within a short period of time. Multiple reports have been received whereby victims have suffered significant financial losses.

In two recent investigations, the WPS Cybercrime Investigation Team, with the support of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, traced the fraudulent crypto assets to cryptocurrency accounts held by foreign actors overseas.

Homicide – Investigation: C22-89437

On May 1, 2022, shortly after midnight, Winnipeg Police responded to a report of an injured male at a hotel in the 300 block of Smith Street. The victim, in his 30’s, was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision – Investigation: C22-89503

On May 1, 2022, at approximately 2:20 a.m., emergency services personnel responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Bond Street and Kildare Avenue West.

The 24-year-old female driver of one of the vehicles had to be extracted by WFPS responders. She was conveyed to a hospital in critical condition; however, she succumbed to her injuries. The driver and occupants of the other vehicle fled the scene.

Motor Vehicle Collision: C22-88338

On April 29, 2022, at approximately 5:45 p.m., emergency services personnel responded to the area of Bairdmore Boulevard near De Vos Road for a report of a motor vehicle collision where a train had struck a passenger vehicle at a railway crossing.

The driver and passenger, both adult males, were extracted from the vehicle and transported to the hospital in stable condition.

Sexual Exploitation/Assault – Arrest: R22-15958

The Winnipeg Police Service previously released information about a historical sexual investigation involving a physical education teacher who coached football at Churchill High School and Vincent Massey Collegiate, respectively, for approximately two decades.

On April 12, 2022, Kelsey Albert Dana MCKAY, 51, was charged with fourteen exploitation and sexual assault-related offences against five former students he coached at these schools. The survivors, now adults, were teenagers when the offences occurred.

Break & Enter – Arrest: C22-83106

On April 23, 2022, at approximately 3:45 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received a report of a commercial break-in in progress occurring in the 300 block of Dufferin Avenue. A suspect was determined to still be on the premises.

North District General Patrol Officers, with the assistance of a K-9 Unit responded and located a lone suspect in the process of exiting the commercial building.
