Project Bluff – Human Trafficking Investigation: R20-57673

The Counter Exploitation Unit (CEU) is part of the Winnipeg Police Service's Specialized Investigation Division committed to the protection of those involved in the sex trade, as well as the enforcement of individuals who exploit vulnerable members of the community for sexual services.

Shooting – Update: C22-134902

Update:

On June 21, 2022, the Major Crimes Unit became aware that a second victim was injured during a shooting incident at Exhibition Park.

An 11-year-old boy (unknown to the parties involved in the shooting) was in the company of his mother and in close proximity when the shooting occurred. A round struck the victim in his lower body. As the area was in chaos, his mother got him to safety and immediately transported him to hospital. He was treated for a gunshot wound and the police were later notified.

Carjacking – Update: C22-119278

Update:

The Major Crimes Unit arrested a second suspect for a carjacking involving a firearm on June 3, 2022, in front of a library in the 500 block of Salter Street.

On June 21, 2022, investigators arrested Donovan Delaney PRUDEN (19) of Winnipeg, who had since been detained at the Brandon Correctional Centre on an unrelated matter. He was charged with the following offences:

- Armed Robbery with a Firearm
- Fail to Comply with Release Order.

He remains in custody.

Homicide – Update: C22-103187

As previously released:

The Winnipeg Police Service was searching Brady Road Resource Management Facility for the human remains of homicide victim Rebecca Contois (24).

On June 14, 2022, police recovered human remains during the search.


Update:

The remains have been identified as those of Rebecca Contois.

Stabbing – Arrest: C22-135004

On June 20, 2022, at 9:07 p.m., Central District General Patrol officers, with the assistance of the Foot Patrol unit, responded to a hotel in the 100 block of Garry Street for a report of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 35-year-old male and began to apply emergency medical care. The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable condition.

Shooting – Arrests: C22-134902

On June 20, 2022, at 7:03 p.m., West District General Patrol officers, with the assistance of the K9 Unit and Tactical Support Team, responded to an exhibition park in the 3900 block of Portage Avenue for a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 16-year-old male being tended to by on-site emergency medical services. The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable condition.

Homicide – Update: C22-20547

On January 29, 2022, at approximately 3:00 a.m., emergency personnel responded to the 600 block of Main Street for the report of a seriously injured male. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition, and police were subsequently notified. He later succumbed to his injuries.

The Homicide Unit took over the investigation, and the deceased was identified as Norman Nigel BIRD, a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg.

Shooting – Investigation: C22-133422

On June 19, 2022, just after midnight, officers in the North District responded to a shooting at a residence in the 300 block of Aberdeen Avenue.

Police located an adult male outside the residence with a gunshot wound to his lower body. They provided emergency medical care, and he was transported to hospital in unstable condition and upgraded to stable condition.

Investigators believe the victim, in his thirties, had accidentally discharged the firearm shooting himself and will continue investigating the circumstances leading up to the discharge.

Stabbing – Investigation: C22-133473

On June 19, 2022, at approximately 1:30 a.m., officers from the West District responded to the 600 block of Stewart Street for the report of a female who had been stabbed.

Officers located an injured female at Stewart/Ness, bleeding profusely. They provided emergency medical care to control the bleeding, and she was subsequently transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

A scene was subsequently located at a hotel in the 3700 block of Portage Avenue.

Stabbing – Investigation: C22-133794

On June 19, 2022, at approximately 2:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a convenience store in the 500 block of Ellice Avenue for the report of a stabbing.

An injured male in his twenties was located slumped against the building. Officers applied emergency medical care, including a chest seal, until he was transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable condition.
