Change your clock, change your smoke alarm batteries

Winnipeg, MB - On Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 2:00 a.m., the clocks will "spring ahead" one hour marking the start of daylight savings time. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is encouraging citizens to take a moment to replace the batteries and test their smoke alarms when adjusting their clocks for this weekend's time change.

According to recent statistics, people are four times more likely to die in a fire if their smoke alarms aren’t working.

Report recommends reallocation of existing SHED funding

Winnipeg, MB - An administrative report recommending that Council approve a reallocation of previously approved Sports, Hospitality and Entertainment District funding as well as an additional Tax Increment Financing grant contribution in partnership with the province and True North Sports & Entertainment Ltd. will be presented at next week’s Executive Policy Committee meeting on March 15.

City of Winnipeg implementing cost mitigation measures to address 2017 budget shortfall

Winnipeg, MB - In order to address the City of Winnipeg’s anticipated 2017 budget shortfall of $9.5 million, immediate cost mitigation measures are being put in place.

The Council adopted 2017 budget included transferring an estimated surplus of $9.5 million from 2016. However, due largely to a record snowfall in December, the 2016 budget year ended in a tax-supported deficit, prior to Council approved deficit elimination measures, and the City must now find $9.5 million in savings.

Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot Temporarily Closed

Winnipeg, MB - Due to today's extreme weather conditions and to ensure the safety of customers and staff, the Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot is temporarily closed to the public.

Residents who wish to drop of materials can use the main landfill entrance at the Brady Road Resource Management Facility, where an alternate disposal area has been set up.

The Pacific 4R Winnipeg Depot at 1120 Pacific Avenue is open. Operating hours are as follows:

Johnson Avenue West will be temporarily closed from Roch Street to Levis Street on March 4

Winnipeg, MB - Johnson Avenue West from Roch Street to Levis Street will be temporarily closed to both eastbound and westbound vehicular traffic from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4 for private water and sewer connection work by Kyle Construction.

Pedestrian sidewalk access will be maintained while work is underway. Motorists should allow additional time to get to their destinations, and use alternate routes.

Animal Services celebrates banner year!

Winnipeg, MB -In 2016, 97 per cent of the dogs that entered Animal Services were reunited with their owner, adopted out, or sent to a rescue or animal shelter. This figure has dramatically increased from 75 per cent in 2008.

City of Winnipeg Spring/Summer Leisure Guide now available

Winnipeg, MB - The Spring/Summer 2017 Leisure Guide is now available at all civic indoor pools, libraries and leisure centres, and will be available Saturday at a number of retail locations. Winnipeg Free Press subscribers will receive a copy in today’s edition of the paper.

The Leisure Guide can also be viewed online by visiting Winnipeg.ca.

Activity registration will have staggered start dates as follows:

Tuesday, March 14 at 8:00 a.m. - Registration begins for swimming lessons only.
