Animal Services celebrates banner year!

Winnipeg, MB -In 2016, 97 per cent of the dogs that entered Animal Services were reunited with their owner, adopted out, or sent to a rescue or animal shelter. This figure has dramatically increased from 75 per cent in 2008.

The team at Animal Services tries to save as many dogs as possible. Animal Services operates an “open admission” shelter for stray dogs, which means that the Agency will take in all dogs from the streets of Winnipeg, from friendly dogs to those with aggression issues. Sick and injured dogs receive immediate medical care, dogs in need of extra socialization are placed in foster homes who give them the care they need, and Animal Services’ volunteers and staff walk, play with, and socialize adoptable dogs daily.

Animal Services posts adoptable dogs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as on Petfinder.com. Animal Services’ staff and volunteers attended more than 20 events in 2016 discussing licensing, adoption, and responsible pet ownership.

Animal Services officials remind pet owners to call 311, visit Animal Services, and post on Winnipeg Lost Dog Alert on Facebook if you lose your dog. Lost pets wearing licenses are easily reunited by 311.In 2016, 311 customer service representatives reunited 584 lost pets wearing licenses without those pets setting “paw” in an animal shelter.

What does pet license revenue fund?

Pet licensing provides ongoing revenues to help fund services that the City of Winnipeg has implemented to help pets, including:

  • Housing and care for lost pets,
  • Reunite lost pets with their owners.
  • Provide emergency attendance at house fires, car accidents, and police incidents to help in the removal and care of pets.
  • Operate a pet adoption program.
  • Support low-cost community spay/neuter programs.
  • Educate the public about Responsible Pet Ownership.
