Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Hamilton Avenue Fire

Released: March 7, 2019 at 10:50 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - At 5:42 p.m. on March 6, 2019 Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a fire alarm in a six-storey apartment block in the 400 block of Hamilton Avenue. Approximately 30 individuals were evacuated during the response. Crews successfully brought the fire under control at 6:03 p.m. No injuries were reported.

WFPS crews ventilated the building of smoke and most evacuated residents were able to return to their suites. The occupants of five suites, including the one where the fire originated, were unable to return. While the one suite suffered fire, smoke and water damage, the four others suffered significant water damage. The block’s property management firm was able to relocate all affected residents.

The WFPS Fire Investigator has determined the fire was caused by careless disposal of smoking materials. Residents are reminded to always take proper care when disposing of cigarettes or other smoking materials, ensuring all butts and ash are out by soaking them with water prior to putting them in the trash. Smoking in bed, or on a soft surface such as a couch or upholstered chair increases the risk of a fire as embers or butts can smolder for a significant time. When smoking outdoors, never dispose of butts in flower planters, or in your lawn or garden. Instead use a sturdy metal container filled partly with sand or water, always ensuring the container is emptied regularly.

No damage estimates are available at this time.
