Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Wellington Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At approximately 5:30 a.m. on June 6, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of smoke at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel at 1999 Wellington Avenue. Once on scene, crews found smoke in the lobby and on a number of floors. Most hotel guests self-evacuated and crews used the public address system to ask the remaining guests to evacuate. Crews assisted a number of individuals with mobility issues to evacuate.

Street closures for the Transcona Hi Neighbour Festival

Winnipeg, MB – The following temporary street closures will be in place from Thursday, June 6 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, June 9 at 11 p.m., for the Transcona Hi Neighbour festival:

  • Northbound and southbound Day Street between Victoria Avenue to Melrose Avenue
  • Northbound and southbound Bond Street between Victoria Avenue to Melrose Avenue
  • Eastbound and westbound Regent Avenue West between Winona Street to Kanata Street

Pedestrian access will be maintained and motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes during this time.

Upcoming temporary closure of King Street between McDermot Avenue and William Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – King Street from McDermot Avenue to William Avenue will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 6 p.m. Friday, June 7 until noon on Sunday, June 9 for the 1919 Centennial Concert.

Pedestrian access on King Street will be maintained.

Motorists should allow for additional travel time, and use alternate routes in this area to reach their destinations.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Wildland fires south of Perimeter Highway

Winnipeg, MB – At 4:25 p.m. on June 4, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a large grass fire just south of the Perimeter Highway. Once on scene, crews found the fire was quickly spreading with the wind and quickly worked to protect nearby structures. They estimated the fire extended approximately a half kilometer west of St Mary’s Road between Paul’s Boulevard and Forbes Road

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Wildland fires

Winnipeg, MB – Over the weekend, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a number of wildland fires, including significant ones on Murdock Road and in the Assiniboine Forest.

Crews were on scene at the Murdock Road fire for approximately 10 hours and required evacuation of two homes due to smoke. The Assiniboine Forest fire event lasted 18 hours and required the evacuation of a number of households along the forest edge due to direct fire threat. In total, 210 WFPS members were used to fight these two fires.

Tree pest caterpillar control program continues

Winnipeg, MB – Today, June 3, 2019, weather permitting, the City of Winnipeg’s Insect Control Branch will continue its tree pest caterpillar control program. Yesterday evening, the Insect Control Branch completed treatment in Insect Management Area 40.

City releases 2019 First Quarter Financial Status Report and Forecast

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s first quarterly financial status report and forecast is forecasting a projected deficit in the tax-supported operating budget (General Revenue Fund) of $9.8 million, as at March 31, 2019. The status report and forecast will be presented at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance on June 7, 2019.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Manitoba Avenue and wildland fires

Winnipeg, MB – At 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two and a half storey house in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue. Once on scene, crews encountered heavy flames and smoke. An offensive attack and search of the home was launched. Crews located one individual deceased inside of the house. A deceased cat was also found.
