Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Overnight fires

Winnipeg, MB - At 1:18 a.m. on August 2, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire outide a commercial structure in the 400 block of Dufferin Avenue. Once on scene, crews found multiple vehicles on fire. The fire was quickly brought under control. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.

Citizens encouraged to get involved on Boards and Commissions

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg will be accepting applications for positions on various Boards and Commissions from August 1, 2019 to October 18, 2019.

The City Clerk’s Department initiates an annual selection process to fill citizen member positions to Boards and Commissions on which there are imminent or existing vacancies.

City of Winnipeg invites residents to come in and cool off during forecasted high heat

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg invites residents to come in and cool off in civic facilities during regular operating hours, as high temperatures are forecasted over the next few days.

City facilities that are normally open on weekdays and weekends are available to act as 'cooling areas' where the public may come in for relief from the heat and have access to drinking water.

City pools and spray pads are also great ways to cool down.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Redonda Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 3:58 a.m. on July 27, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire on the roof of a school in the 200 block of Redonda Street. Once on scene, crews were able to quickly knock down the fire, declaring it under control at 4:23 a.m.

Damage from the fire was contained to roofing materials and equipment which were on the roof at the time.

No injuries were reported. The fire is currently under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

24-hour notice - Adult nuisance mosquito fogging program to begin

Winnipeg, MB - In response to the recent significant rainfall of up to 180 mm in the City, the Insect Control Branch has aggressively larvicided to control mosquito populations. These measures alone are no longer sufficient to control the nuisance mosquito population so an adult nuisance mosquito fogging program will be implemented. Fogging will begin on Saturday, July 27, 2019, between 9:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Grant Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 2:05 a.m. on July 26, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a balcony fire in a five storey apartment block in the 1200 block of Grant Avenue. The 911 call was made by a driver who happened to be passing by the building. Once on scene, crews found a fire on a fifth floor balcony. It was quickly knocked down before it extended to the walls of the structure.

Evacuation of the building was not required. No injuries were reported.

St. James Bridge on and off ramps at Academy Road temporarily closed this weekend

Winnipeg, MB - Southbound St. James Bridge to eastbound Academy Road (off-ramp), and westbound Academy Road to northbound St. James Bridge (on-ramp) will be temporarily closed from 7 a.m. Saturday, July 27 until 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 28 for paving of Academy Road from Kenaston Boulevard to Beaverbrook Street.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route and to plan for additional travel time to reach their destinations.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Jarvis Avenue Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 12:43 a.m. on July 22, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to fire in a large commercial and industrial building at 274 Jarvis Ave. After approximately 32 hours fighting the fire, demolishing the building, and extinguishing hotspots, WFPS crews were able to clear the scene.

WFPS crews have put a fire watch in place and will return to the scene every two hours to investigate for, and extinguish any hotspots that flare up.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Sherbrook Street Fire

Winnipeg, MB - At 1:54 p.m. on July 22, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two and a half storey converted residential dwelling in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street. Once on scene, crews launched an offensive attack and at 2:43 p.m. were able to declare it under control.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire will be under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
