City awards renovation grants to 15 community centres

Winnipeg, MB – Fifteen City-owned community centres will receive funding for renovations through the City of Winnipeg’s Community Centre Renovation Grant program (CCRGP).

“As the Province of Manitoba continues to reopen the economy, community centres will become important places for our residents again,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. "The Community Centre Renovation Grant program is an important City of Winnipeg resource that helps ensure our existing community assets are up-to-date, safe, and accessible so they can be enjoyed for years to come.”

City launches new online photo evidence viewer for parking tickets

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is launching a new online tool that allows vehicle owners to view the photo evidence associated with parking tickets from their computer or mobile device.

Previously, vehicle owners had to wait to correspond with a screening officer to view the evidence against them – a process that often led to delays in resolving appeals. With the online photo evidence viewer, vehicle owners will be able to view the evidence associated with their tickets before they decide to appeal.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a house fire on McGee Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:11 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey house in the 600 block of McGee Street.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy flames and smoke coming from the house. Crews launched a defensive attack, fighting the fire from the outside until it was safe to launch an interior, offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 9:51 p.m.

City officially opens pedestrian-cyclist underpass beneath Fermor Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – Today, Councillor Matt Allard, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works, and Councillor Brian Mayes, St. Vital Ward, officially opened the pedestrian-cyclist underpass beneath Fermor Avenue. Located between St. Anne’s Road and Archibald Street, the underpass connects Niakwa Trail to Des Meurons Street and effectively links southeast Winnipeg to Downtown, and provides a safer, more comfortable experience for cyclists and pedestrians.

City releases Financial Status Report and Forecast to March 31, 2020

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s first quarter financial status report and forecast is forecasting a projected deficit in the tax-supported operating budget (General Revenue Fund) of $25.8 million, as at March 31, 2020. Combined with other forecasted operating shortfalls, this financial status report and forecast is projecting a total year-end shortfall of $53.8 million. The status report and forecast will be presented at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance on June 12, 2020.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on River Road and Flora Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:08 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey, multi-family residence in the 700 block of River Road.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke coming from the building and launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 2:23 p.m.
